CNU NEW YORK is pleased to announce that the Municipal Art Society and the New York chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism will host architect and urbanist Léon Krier on December 9, 2009 at 6:30 PM in the Municipal Art Society’s Urban Center at 457 Madison Avenue, between 50th and 51st streets.
In recognition of h...is role as the godfather of both New Urbanism and contemporary Classicism, Krier won the first Driehaus Prize from Richard A. Driehaus and the University of Notre Dame, and the first Athena Award, given by the Congress for the New Urbanism. Krier's design in 1976 for the new Parisian neighborhood La Villette was the first complete expression of New Urbanism. The new town of Poundbury, designed by Krier, is rapidly becoming one of the best built New Urban works.
At the December 9th event, Krier will discuss the concept of The Architecture of Community, also the title of his newest book. In the Architecture of Community, Krier refines and distills forty years of thinking on the making of sustainable, humane, and beautiful villages, towns, and cities. Through this discussion, the audience can learn how to make their own neighborhoods into more vibrant communities.
Copies of both The Architecture of Community and Krier’s other new book, Drawing for Architecture, will be available for purchase and signing. Tickets for the talk cost $15, or $10 for CNU and MAS members. Reservations are recommended (Purchase tickets online at <http://MAS.org/calendar/>or call (212) 935-2075).

CNU New York Listen for Rick Cole's segment on this Public Radio program on "Re-BURBIA." Rick is the City Manager of Ventura, California, a long time member of the CNU, and in this case an antidote to the usual focus on architects' and artists' individual visions and experimentation rather than models of urbanism that work. "Reform...ing zoning is the single most important thing we can do for sustainability in America," he says.
