As if ice and snow were not enough, the Arctic conditions gripping the country are causing roads to break up and potholes to appear. Temperatures have been so low for so long that roads are deteriorating much faster than is normally expected, creating

A new bicycle wheel, developed by researchers at MIT, can store energy every time the rider puts on the brakes, and then give that power back to provide a boost when going uphill or to add a burst of speed in traffic.

I know its cheating but a boost when going up hills is slightly appealing!!

Having just nearly been knocked off by some silly driver not LOOKING - bearing in mind I was on the main road NOT him - I think the roads will only be safer if we change the attitue and raise awareness in this country, but how can a stern minded car driver be converted into having a broader horizon if he himself does not even own a bike? I do not know and fear this is an impossible task! unfortunatley :-(

Dubbed the iPod zombies, cyclists who are distracted by thumping tunes blaring in their ears have become the latest menace on Britain's roads.

I like to listen to my i pod on my morning commute. In reality it's better to look around you relentlessly and to be aware of traffic via your eyes than to rely on your hearing . While out on a training ride with friends i really noticed that the noise of the air passing around me without music was enough to render sound from around me as an ... See Moreindicator of danger pointless. Only 1% of accidents occur from rear end collisions and if you are visually aware of traffic you will reduce this. Drivers are enclosed in steel and aluminum with their radios on and are therefore reliant on vision as the primary sense, therefore to suggest that the wearing of an i pod on a bicycle as negligent is frankly quite ridiculous.I agree that it is often great to listen to the sounds around and about but to be honest some of you need to get off your high horses and realize that when cycling at speed in traffic the only useful aid is vision as wind noise is significant esp when wearing a helmet. Ride fast and ride defensive is the way and an i pod does not render this as impossible, or indeed dangerous.
