CU Art Museum, University of Colorado at Boulder Aleksandr Fazini:
Saul Fineselberg was part of a family of famous Russian Jewish intellectuals, who scattered across Europe in the interwar period. Fineselberg changed his name to Aleksandr Fazini, moved to Paris, and joined the surrealist circle of Pablo Picasso. Fazini’s painting was situated on the edges of abstracti...on and surrealism and his work was marked by a desire for new experiences that positioned him uniquely within the School of Paris. He gained noteriety in the period 1920–1925 and the Galerie d’Art Vavin exhibited him for two years alongside Jean Lurçat, Pablo Picasso and Georges Papazoff. In this talk/visual presentation, Alexandra Ilf, his niece, will present the life and work of this little known Russian Jewish modernist artist, who was killed in Auschwitz during the Holocaust.

Our visiting scholar:
Alexandra Ilf, the daughter of the famous Soviet writer Ilya Ilf, has prepared for publication the complete text of Ilf’s "Notebooks" (Text, 2002) and restored the authors’ version of "The Twelve Chairs" (Text, 2001) and "The Golden Calf" (Text,
2002), compiled and prefaced "The one-storied America" and "Letters from America" (Text, 2003, 2004) and a book of correspondence Ilya Ilf, or "Love Letters" (Text, 2004). Her most recent works focus on uncovering the life story and work of her uncle, Aleksandr Fazini. She lives in Moscow. Funding for this lecture is generously provided in part by the CU Art Museum Members and Benefactors; the Arts and Culture Enrichment Fees (ACE Fees); and by the Goldberger Fund for Jewish Culture.
