Cal Hep B Free
On November 18, 2008, Cal Hep B Free and Project Michelle are hosting a joint event to promote awareness and save lives! There's a concert, and on-campus testing/screening/swabbing for the two life-saving causes, food, and more!
Think about it: 1 in 4 people have cancer, which means that there are a lot of cancer-victim...s out there.
There are two types of cancer that can be stopped: leukemia, and liver cancer.
Hepatitis B is one of the leading causes of liver cancer, and vaccination of an UNinfected person could save their life. But just because you're currently vaccinated doesn't mean you don't have hepatitis B. Most people with hepatitis B are infected at birth.
So get TESTED! and get your family and friends to get TESTED as well.
But we can't pull this off alone, and we need YOUR help! Yes, YOU. We need people to help us get the show on the road, and people to be the force behind this movement.
Don't miss out! Come to our task force infomeeting this Saturday at 1pm, 2nd floor Eshelman.
Interested in getting more involved than for this event? Contact any of us and we can fill you in on how you can do more.
B A HERO!
SAVE LIVES!
EVEN IF YOU CAN'T MAKE THE MEETING, LET US KNOW IF YOU'D STILL LIKE TO HELP! WE CAN FILL YOU IN!! :D

Cal Hep B Free
The teach-in will feature Cal alumna Lisa Tang, MD (Kaiser), Yale-alumnus Scott Moon (Gilead), and Cal alumnus Denis Lam (BS \'07 BioE). They will talk about the importance of hepatitis B awareness and testing, how UCB students can get involved in the Hep B campaign, and their diverse experiences in their medical caree...rs. More importantly, they will speak about how and why they have selected their career paths and they hope their advice may guide students at UCB to find their own paths in the near future.
Lisa Tang (class of 1998, MCB double major at UCB) was born in Hong Kong and is a 1st generation Chinese American immigrant. She grew up in San Francisco and went to Lowell HS. After graduating from UCB with a double major molecular cell biology with emphasis in neurobiology and psychology, she did research at UCSF to address the unique healthcare needs of Asian Americans. Afterwards, she entered medical school at UC San Diego and completed her Family Medicine residency at UC San Francisco. Currently she is practicing at Kaiser San Francisco and is extremely involved with the SF Hep B Free Campaign from the very beginning.
Scott Moon (PA-C, MMSc., Sr. Medical Scientist in Community HBV) completed his professional education as a physician assistant at Yale Medical School. After graduation, Scott completed a one-year, AAPA sponsored fellowship in Hepatology at Scripps Clinic. He was subsequently hired by Scripps, where he worked in clinical practice caring for patients with cirrhosis due to hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and other liver diseases. Scott also developed an interest in Transplant Medicine, and cared for patients before and after their liver transplantation surgeries. During his 8 years in practice at Scripps, Scott served as a sub-investigator on approximately 50 clinical trials for medications to treat liver disease. Scott is passionate about community education, disease prevention through vaccination, and access to care issues. He joined Gilead in 2008 as a Senior Medical Scientist on the Community HBV team.
Denis Lam graduated from Cal in 2007 with a BS in Bioengineering. As the founder of Team HBV at Berkeley in 2005, he directed education and advocacy efforts in the areas of hepatitis B and liver cancer prevention and control. Working with a team of students, he developed and coordinated many local outreach events that have outreached to over 10,000 people around the Bay Area to date and founded the \"Jade Ribbon Campaign DeCal,\" a course sponsored by the university\'s MCB Dept. that teaches students about the basic epidemiology, etiology, transmission, treatments, and considerations for vaccination and screenings for chronic HBV. Currently, he is serving as Advisor for all national Team HBV chapters and an Advisory Board Member for San Francisco Hep B Free, focusing on grant writing, donor relations, media production, and HBV epidemiological research. In his spare time, he is working hard to organize \"Cal Hep B Free,\" a campus-wide program to screen and educate Cal students about HBV in Fall 2008, and rooting for the LA Lakers.
