Penguins Rejoice as Antarctica Gets Its First High Seas Marine Protected Area
The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources recently approved a new MPA south of the South Orkney Islands, the first of its kind in the region. In addition to housing more animal species than the Galapagos, the ar...ea is a key habitat for krill and an important foraging site for Adelie penguins. The new MPA will give scientists a special opportunity to study the effects of climate change. The Commission also plans to create a network of MPAs along 11 other high priority areas in the Southern Ocean by the year 2012. Why the Hammerhead Shark Got Its Hammer
For over a century, scientists have speculated as to why hammerhead sharks evolved such an odd shape. A new study, which involved some serious shark optometry, showed that those with wider heads have better binocular vision. Hammerheads were shown to have a 360 degree view of th...e world in a vertical plane, meaning they can simultaneously see prey above and below them! Talk about eyes in the back (side?) of the head...
