CalOceans Global Divers: Help Give Feedback on Marine Protected Areas in California!

In this article, Dr. Bill Bushing, ecologist and veteran SCUBA diver, calls on fellow divers around the world to give input to the California Fish and Game Commission in advance of their meeting on December 9. He's concerned about overfishing an...d the health of marine ecosystems, and he says that so far, divers' voices have not been sufficiently heard: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/ocean-conservation/313974-global-divers-help-give-feedback-marine-protected-areas-catalina-island-ca.html

I like how the pic for this is a Garabaldi, which is already completely protected, and will NOT benefit from reserves

CalOceans Peace on the Beach

A green blogger gives SoCal's Heal the Bay a pat on the back for their efforts to reduce marine pollution and create Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) for ecosystem protection and fishery management. She'll also tell you why a Heal the Bay membership makes a great stocking stuffer: http://www.recycledbri...de.com/blog/2009/11/heal-the-santa-monica-bay/

marcela, If you watched the north coast meetings, The farallons was designated as a NO boating, swimming, anchoring, diving, reserve ( basically, NO HUMAN USES)
this was because birds, and was proposed, and aproved at the DFG, not BRTF meeting (i.e brought up at the last second)
Sands beach in goleta is a perfect candidate for this because it is a snowy plover nesting ground, as well as a surf spot.

CalOceans Thar She Glows!

Ms. Blue, the 87-foot long blue whale skeleton at UC Santa Cruz's Long Marine Laboratory, will be decked out - like so many halls - in honor of the holiday season, sporting a dazzling array of festive white lights. The "whale lighting" ceremony will take place Sunday, Dec. 6 at 5:45 pm, though the Jingl...e Shell Arts and Crafts Festival will be rocking all day, from 10 to 5:30. Gifts and trinkets will be available for all the ocean lovers on your list; proceeds go to benefit marine science education. More infor here: http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/text.asp?pid=3415

CalOceans Penguins Rejoice as Antarctica Gets Its First High Seas Marine Protected Area

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources recently approved a new MPA south of the South Orkney Islands, the first of its kind in the region. In addition to housing more animal species than the Galapagos, the ar...ea is a key habitat for krill and an important foraging site for Adelie penguins. The new MPA will give scientists a special opportunity to study the effects of climate change. The Commission also plans to create a network of MPAs along 11 other high priority areas in the Southern Ocean by the year 2012. CalOceans Why the Hammerhead Shark Got Its Hammer

For over a century, scientists have speculated as to why hammerhead sharks evolved such an odd shape. A new study, which involved some serious shark optometry, showed that those with wider heads have better binocular vision. Hammerheads were shown to have a 360 degree view of th...e world in a vertical plane, meaning they can simultaneously see prey above and below them! Talk about eyes in the back (side?) of the head... For more info on the recent findings, see this article from New Scientist: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn18210-why-the-hammerhead-shark-got-its-hammer.html

CalOceans Voila! Healthy Oceans Can Help Save Us From Climate Change!

The Blue Climate Coalition - a group of conservationists, marine scientists, and professionals from 33 countries - recently issued a series of letters to President Obama and the US Senate supporting marine conservation options that will help mitigate climate c...hange. Among the signers were world-renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, two of Jacques Cousteau's grandkids, and "Sex in the City" actor Gilles Marini (pictured below, in all his "Dancing With the Stars" splendor). CalOceans MPAs Work, Studies Show

Scientific studies show that marine reserves help replenish fish stocks and protect ocean habitat. Learn more about 'em from the biologists at UC Santa Cruz:

Nice article! Especially interesting where they talk about Mexico...

The first reserve in the Puerto Pe... See Moreñasco area was established in 2001 around an island...snip... trained the fishermen to monitor shellfish populations in and around the reserve. "The response was really quick, so they could see a classic reserve effect one year later," Cudney-Bueno said. "That led to more areas being closed, and the first paper shows the effects of the network of reserves."

The cooperative was so successful it was recognized by the Mexican government with a Presidential Conservation Award.

The 'end of the line' for South Coast Marine Protected Areas has arrived! Dec 9th marks the final meeting in a 'yearlong process', and we need you to attend. As you know, the Blue Ribbon Task Force unanimously voted to forward a final map to the Fish and Game Commission. ...

Its not your last chance! Come on now. The meeting is on the 9th is important, but it is just meant to be an exchange of information and a changing of the guard from the BRTF to the FGC. There has been no indication that they will even be taking comment. (if someone knows different, please educate us). The following meetings will be more ... See Moreimportant for public to show up as the FGC solicits comment. What I hear is that the FGC will not likely make a decision until June or even August. Yes, write those letters, prepare your comments, show up on the 9th, but this is not the last chance to make a difference.

PS: Surfrider and CalOceans are asking you to support the Integrated Preferred Alternative proposal hacked together by the BRTF. I do NOT support the IPA. It is flawed, has disturbing instances of illusory protection and conspicuous lack of protection in particular areas. IPA falls significantly short of the intent and letter of the MLPAI law... See More. I still support Work Group 3's proposal with some concessions to negative short term economic hardships to the fishing industry. Bottom Line. EDUCATE YOURSELF AND DO NOT GIVE KNEE JERK SUPPORT TO THESE POSTS. If after careful consideration, you agree with what is being asked of you, then have at it with all your heart. Think first.
