One of the fine things in going to a school that had a very old, and well endowed library, (and just happen to be in NY state) was finding French plates adorning books in the stacks. They are works of art.

Cambridge Bookplate American Artists of the Bookplate: Paul Landacre

Fine wood engraving by Paul H. Landacre (1893-1963) for John & Marion Gayton. Landacre worked in the graphic arts in California for most of his life. Many art critics considered him to be one of America's best wood engravers. He has 20 bookplates to his credit.

He is q...uoted as saying:

"Art to me is more or less an emotional catharsis,
and while I usually suffer during the process, I
feel grand when a block is completed...."

Cambridge Bookplate American Artists of the Bookplate: Serik Kulmeshkenov

Bookplate design is a lifelong passion for talented engraver, Serik Kulmeshkenov. Born in Astana, Kazakhstan in 1956, Serik pursued a career in art & architecture before immigrating to the United States in 1993. Serik is now a member of the ASBC&D.

Several years ag...o, Serik wrote an article that we published in the Ex Libris Chronicle. This autobiography described how he developed his love for bookplates.

It was through an old newspaper article that he found at his mother’s house more than 30 years ago. The article, “The Magic World of Ex Libris” was accompanied by several nice bookplate reproductions. It was not how this story was written, but rather the concept behind this graphic art form that was thrilling. Serik promptly sent a letter to the publisher of the article in Siberia. Months later he received his reply from the author and artist Oleg Besedin along with a few superb bookplates. This was the turning point as he had discovered the art of the bookplate!

He then had the good fortune of moving to Minneapolis. It somehow seems appropriate that he should reside in a city where so much attention is given to the book arts. Serik can now boast more than 300 engraved bookplates on his opus list and he has received 100’s of awards since 1985!

Cambridge Bookplate AMERICAN ARTISTS OF THE BOOKPLATE: Arthur Nelson Macdonald

This was bookplate was engraved on metal in 1917 by Arthur Nelson Macdonald (1866-1940). Truman Handy Newberry was a Senator from Michigan. Born in Detroit, he was engaged in manufacturing activities for most of his life. He served as Secretary of the Navy i...n the Cabinet of President Theodore Roosevelt (1908-1909). Newberry also served in the United States Senate from 1919 until his resignation in 1922.

Born in Massachusetts, Macdonald was known for his classic, dignified bookplate designs. He was the last of the 5 "Little Masters" of engraving of the early 20th century--E.D. French, W.F. Hopson, S.L. Smith, J.W. Spenceley & A.N. Macdonald. During the late 19th century Macdonald developed a close friendship with French and sent his designs to him for friendly criticism and advice. Eventually Macdonald moved to New Jersey and became active in commercial graphic arts with work that included book illustrating, trade cards and certificates. Some say that during his career he designed over 400 different bookplates.
