Beginning guitar lessons for Teenagers
Music Speaks program for Grades 9-12.Music Speaks, a program of Passim Folk Music & Cultural Center, teaches teenagers from all communities’ basic guitar playing and songwriting techniques. With the help of dedicated teachers, donated guitars, and scholarships, Music Speaks provide...s a nurturing musical environment for teenagers. Through music education, students learn valuable life skills, including confidence, creativity, and discipline.

Tuesdays 4:30-5:45 for 6 weeks
Beginning Guitar Class Description: Do you love to listen to music and wish you could play the songs you love? In this class you'll learn guitar technique and some basic theory by learning songs. You get to build a 'guitar playing toolbox' of chords as well as strumming and finger picking patterns that help you work through the initial hurdles of guitar playing: putting your fingers on the strings, reading chord charts, and singing playing simultaneously.
Cost: $132/$108 members for the semester. Partial scholarships & guitars available for those who qualify!

If you've taken a guitar class or two and you want to add some new styles to your repertoire, this is the class for you.... Jordan will give you an overview of the flatpicking style, from rhythm playing and accompaniment to improvising bluegrass licks. Throughout the course, you will play fiddle tunes on the guitar while focusing on the rhythm and technique that tie it all together. By the end of the course, you'll be ready to jump right in to play alongside banjos, mandolins, and fiddles!

Would you like to add another instrument to your repertoire, without carrying yet one more thing around? Well, ha...ve we got the instrument for you! Not only is a harmonica cheap, and fun to play, it easily fits in your pocket and can go anywhere with you. This class will start at the very beginning with basic techniques and move through a variety of styles, including straight harp and cross harp. We will explore the music of players like Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young, and then move on to the blues styles of Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, and Sonny Terry. No experience necessary; all levels are welcome. Students will need to provide a diatonic harmonica in the key of C. This class is a continuation of Janet’s Guitar 1 class. This class is for you if: You can play some open chords and can switch from one to the other with relative ...comfort; you have a few songs that you like to play, a strumming and/or finger picking pattern you know. That's great, except that you're REALLY TIRED of what you already know and are aching for some new stuff to do. By learning songs, you will learn a variety of strumming and finger picking patterns. We will also learn some basic theory, only as it's applicable to what you're actually playing on the guitar. The idea here is to take the fear and mystery away so that we can have loads of fun - isn't that why we all started playing the guitar to begin with? You'll learn how to identify the chords you already play, and we'll also try out bar chords. Bring a guitar and a flat pick.

Have you taken a class and you're ready to play songs with other instruments? Join the Americana Ensemble and get some experience pla...ying with mandolin players, fiddlers, guitarists, vocalists, and more. Singer-songwriters, join us if you'd like to work on arrangements of your songs with a band.
All instruments are welcome. We'll be covering Americana, folk, blues, country, old-time and bluegrass. The specific genres and songs will depend on which instruments are represented in the ensemble. Students should have basic knowledge about the different chords and how to play their instrument.

Harmony Singing: Finding and Keeping a Part with Lauren Sheehan

Important: In this workshop, we will do a lot of singing! I hope participants will get a feel for the basic process of finding a part, the right range to sing in, and some tools for l...earning how to hold the part. We will learn some songs and parts in the process, getting a feel for “blend” and balance and sing in Harmony. Once we have explored how and why to find the right key, we'll learn a song and parts. We'll go through the steps of finding or making a second part, and then a third. We'll repeat the process with another song, giving us a chance to use our approach, rather than just learning parts by rote. We'll play with switching parts, group mixings and other little devices to broaden the singing experience.

If you... haven't taken the earlier classes, this one requires that you can comfortably switch chords, have some comfort playing barre chords (expertise isn't necessary). Bring a guitar, flat pick and a capo. The songs we’ll work with will use both strumming and finger picking.

This class will put lots of great stuff into your "guitar playing toolbox" to help you make better friends with your guitar. You’ll also learn songs and exercises to help you strengthen your fingers, a variety of playing techniques, and some simple, valuable music theory. There will also be an introduction to using open tunings. Bring a guitar, flat pick and a capo.

This class, intended for both singers and instrumentalists wanting to sing, will focus on learning vocal techniques and vocal history. Over six weeks, studen...ts will learn how to select songs for their voice, improve their technique, gain performance confidence and learn about the history of American singing. Songs studied will span various time periods and styles (such as 1920's Blues, 1960's Folk and current music in the student's choice of style). Students will leave this supportive class knowing more about singing, their voice and vocal traditions.
