Forum for European-Australian Science and Technology cooperation German ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter was the first European to be sent on a long-duration mission to the International Space Station (ISS). He was also the first German to visit the ISS. Reiter took off on his six month mission on 4 July 2006 on the US Space Shuttle Discovery. Reiter’s long-duration mission was an import...ant milestone for Europe in the utilisation of the ISS. Two days after arriving at the ISS, Reiter assumed his role of second flight engineer for Expedition Crews 13 and 14. His tasks include the monitoring and maintaining the space station, monitoring the environment and life support systems, the health and safety of the crew, extra-vehicular activity (EVA) or spacewalks, and logistics handling for the Progress transporter.

Astrolab was the first long-duration mission to be managed by a European control centre. Astrolab was being coordinated by DLR on behalf of ESA at the Columbus Control Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen. It is here that Reiter’s activities were coordinated and observed in collaboration with the mission control centres in Houston and Moscow, the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne and various European user centres. Astrolab was providing Europe with important insights into the management of long-duration manned missions as it prepared to coordinate the European research lab mission Columbus, which is scheduled to dock with the ISS in 2008.

Thomas Reiter joined the Executive Board of DLR on 1 October 2007 and is responsible for space research and development. Reiter graduated in aviation and space engineering from the Federal Armed Forces University in Neubiberg. He trained as a jet pilot and was involved in the development of a computer-controlled flight-planning system, and appointed Flight Applications Officer and Deputy Squadron Leader of the 43rd fighter-bomber squadron in Oldenburg. He worked at the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the development team for a manned space vehicle (Hermes). In 1992, he joined the European astronaut team at ESA.
Reiter was chosen for the Euromir 95 mission and was named on-board engineer. While on Euromir 95, he performed two EVAs (Extra Vehicular Activities). He was awarded the Russian ‘Soyuz Return Commander’ certificate, entitling him to assume control of a Soyuz capsule with three crew members during its re-entry from space. From 2001 to 2004, Reiter worked with the Columbus project team on preparations for the European research module.

From 4 July to 22 December 2006, he participated in the Astrolab mission, the first European long-term mission on board the international space station. He carried out another EVA as part of this mission. Thomas Reiter is a holder of the German Federal Service Cross.

This lecture is presented by The Forum for European Australian Science & Technology cooperation, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Canberra and the Australian Academy of Science.
