WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) will return to Capitol Hill Monday to join with her Republican colleagues in calling for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to reconvene the House of Representatives and vote on the American Energy Act.
Rep. Miller is heeding the calls of her constituents to return ...to Washington, D.C., to demand the Democrat leadership of the House of Representatives end their five-week vacation and vote on an energy bill that will help lower the price of oil, increase the supply of domestically produced energy and support alternative energy research.
Some of the alternative energy research could benefit Detroit’s automakers, which are developing the next generation of fuel to power the cars of tomorrow, or the wind farms and cellulosic ethanol plants currently in Michigan’s thumb.
Since the Democrat controlled Congress voted to take a five-week recess on Aug. 1, Republicans on daily basis have gone to the floor of the House of Representatives to discuss the American Energy Act and given constituents the unique opportunity to walk on the floor of the “People’s House” and hear from their representatives.

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI—As gas prices continue to be in excess of $4 a gallon many motorists are deciding to park the car and use public transportation.
Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) will hold a press conference to recognize the large gains the Suburban Mobility for Regional Transportation (SMART) has made with... record ridership in June, and the expanded service the bus system is now offering. Additionally she will speak about her support of public transportation.
Just last month SMART carried more than 44,000 passengers daily for the month of June, and responding to the customer needs, SMART added 14 trips along the heavily traveled Gratiot route from Chesterfield Township to downtown Detroit. With the addition of the new trips, SMART buses run nearly 150 trips daily along Gratiot in Macomb County.
Following short remarks by the Congresswoman, and members of SMART, she will ride the Gratiot bus with constituents to speak to them about their thoughts about public transportation and experience the improvements made to system.

Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) urges boaters and marina operators to participate in an upcoming webcast to learn more about a proposed new permit system for recreational boaters.
The Environmental Protection Agency has released a draft version of a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit which wou...ld impose new requirements for discharges for recreational boater and may cover items from bilge water to deck runoff.
It is scheduled to be enacted on Sept. 30, 2008.
Congresswoman Miller is working in Congress to help pass the Clean Boating Act of 2008, which would maintain exemptions for recreational boaters and continue to operate their vessels in the same fashion.
“The Clean Boating Act is desperately needed to ensure that boaters throughout our nation are not inadvertently negatively impacted by EPA regulations that were never intended to apply to recreational watercraft,” Miller said. “This legislation is important because recreational boating is such a critical part of our local economy and a way of life in our community.”
The EPA recently held a series of meetings on the permit system across the country. On July 2, a public webcast will be held where boaters from Southeast Michigan, and across the state, can learn more about the permit and pose questions of EPA personnel.
The issue stems from a 2006 court ruling which mandated that the EPA create a discharge permit system that restricts discharges from all types of vessels into the nation’s waterways.
Originally the court case centered on invasive species, but the ruling could be extended to include 91,000 commercial vessels and approximately 18 million recreational boats.
Congress took steps this year to exempt recreational vessels including ski boats, canoes and personal watercraft from the permitting process.
Rep. Miller is a sponsor of the legislation and helped pass it through the House Transportation Committee, of which she is a member. The legislation still needs to pass both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate to prevent the EPA permits from going into effect.
“As a recreational boater myself, who has lived by the water my entire life, I urge my fellow boaters to learn more about the proposed permits,” Miller said. “I also want to work with my constituents to help educate them on the efforts I have undertaken to protect boaters from unnecessary legislation while still protecting our waterways.”
For more information about the webcast from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, visit:
