Gathman, Morrow and Swartwout share their analyses or Z-lit, what's available, and what we can learn from the zmbies in terms of biology, history, viewpoint, goals, and possible health benefits.

Do zombies intention...ally recruit? Why do they want us for our brains and not our warm hearts? Is reanimation "green"? Find the answers to your inner ARRRRRGGGHHHHH!Read More

The Indian educational system is based on the British exam driven curriculum, where high-stakes final exams determine both a student’s future and the success of the teacher or institution. Such a system places pressure on the teacher to use a traditional lecture method. However, both teachers and students find this app...roach unsatisfactory. Students are often unable to apply what they have learned, and they complain that what they have learned seems to have little to do with real world issues and events. Peggy Hill will discuss the issues raised and lessons learned as a result of a two-week trip to Kerala, India, where she met with high school science teachers and presented workshops on how to incorporate various Active Learning Techniques into the physics classroom.

How many miles can a person run in one day, swim in one day, bicycle in one day? While ultra-endurance exercise can be defined as lasting beyond four hours, plenty of people have tested themselves for every one of the 86,400 seconds in a single day! Kayaking across oceans, walking across continents, swimming down river...s, bicycling around the world… humans display incredible and fascinating ability to keep going longer and farther than even the Energizer Bunny® can imagine! Dr. Mark Langenfeld, a professor in the Health, Human Performance & Recreation Department, will explore this realm of amazing physical accomplishment by drawing on his experiences as an observer, crew member, participant, and researcher of ultra-endurance performance.

Dance and sports are two movement forms that appeal to
people as participants and spectators for a variety of reasons: kinesthetic, competitive, expressive, artistic, cathartic, and aesthetic. The presentation will involve a discussion of some similarities, differences, and singular qualities between dance and sport fro...m a philosophy of arts perspective, with special reference to Aristotle’s Poetics, Tolstoy’s What is Art? and traditional Navajo attitudes.

Though geographically and historically set
apart from the United States, Africa today
occupies a significant place in international
relations. The continent has experienced much
political upheaval since the independence
movements of the late 1960s. Throughout the
Cold War, the global struggle between the
United States and the... Soviet Union played out
through the use of proxies across Africa.
African politics developed its own unique
character in the post-Cold War era.
Navigating the complexities of the African continent in the twenty-first century, thus, requires a sound understanding of its geographic and historical
realities. The lecture will share knowledge and understanding of a continent not well understood or even considered in the United States, which is a detriment to U.S. interests and policies now and in the future.
Dr. Chau currently teaches on the campus of California State University at San Bernardino, where his research focus is on International Politics, Strategic Studies, East Asia, and Africa. He received his Ph.D. in 2005 from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. Donovan is considered a subject matter expert in the fields of Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and Homeland Security.

There are a number of not-for-profit corporations (and other groups) in Missouri and Arkansas which claim to be Cherokee Indian. These groups set up tribal governments and sell memberships to people who believe that they may have Cherokee ancestry, and think (mistakenly) that enrolling in one of these groups will give ...them legitimate ‘Indian status’. Professor Morrow will talk about this issue and about the Cherokee Nation’s Task Force set up to provide information to the general public about these groups. This presentation is open to all and refreshments will be served.Read More

Marshmallow Peeps, Oreos, and Twinkies are just some of the so-called junk foods that food author Tom Harte freely admits to enjoying, even if he is supposed to be a
gourmet. Mindful of the observation that a gourmet is often nothing more than a glutton in a tux, Tom tells the story behind each of these popular treats a...nd, what
is more, shows how they can be used as ingredients in more epicurean fare. His presentation will conclude with a cooking demonstration and afterwards Tom will be available to sign copies of his cookbook, Stirring Words, which contains dozens of culinary essays and hundreds of recipes that run the gamut from funnel cakes to Sacher tortes.
An emeritus professor of Speech Communication at Southeast Missouri State University and unrecovering chocoholic for whom food has always been a
“consuming” passion, Tom writes a food column for the Southeast Missourian and founded My Daddy’s Cheesecake, Cape Girardeau’s premiere dessert emporium.
The presentation is open to all and refreshments will be served.

This presentation will focus on a series of political caricatures from German daily newspapers between the years 1946 to 1989, that is to say, between the wend of WWII and reunification. The selections of political caricatures cover well over 40 years of German democracy; while not claiming to compete with the history ...book, these selections will show in chronological order satirical examples of how German life, politics, and international relations were impacted.
This lecture is open to all and refreshments will be served.

Sir John Betjeman (1906-1984) was a hugely popular British Poet Laureate, champion of Victoriana, and archetypal eccentric. His verse is both funny and
poignant, chronicling human foibles that are at once uniquely British and yet at the same time universal.
Although he is possibly the most widely-read and enjoyed of twen...tieth-century poets in his native country, Betjeman deserves to be better known in the United
States too. Professor Paul Thompson will read selections from Betjeman’s works, including Summoned By Bells, New Bats in Old Belfries, and a Few Late Chrysanthemums,
and will provide some background to the biography and output of this remarkable personality.
The presentation is open to all and refreshments will be served.
