"Plautine Pirates: Johnny Depp as the Clever Slave"
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Honorary Society of Eta Sigma Phi, and the College of Liberal Arts present Dr. Amber Scaife, Assistant Professor of Classics at Kenyon C...ollege. Dr. Scaife will be discussing the relationship between the Roman comedy play "Pseudolus" ("The Trickster") and the Disney film "Pirates of the Caribbean". Actor Johnny Depp's depiction of the character of Captain Spallow in the movie draws significantly from the archetype of the "clever slave" in Roman comedy, especially the title character from the Pseudolus.
