Hastings Natural History Reserve
The public is invited to a nature walk with lunch, and tour of Hastings Nature Reserve on Saturday, February 6th from 10 am to 1 pm. Included will be a gentle walk (about 1 mile) led by Hastings Director Mark Stromberg sharing stories and information about the local natural history. Weather permitting we’ll extend our ...nature walk to Red Hill (briefly steep) where there is a nice view of upper Carmel Valley from the blue oak forest and field of lava rocks. Lunch will be provided by Michael Jones of the Cachagua Store. Bring your family and friends for a pleasant hike, delicious lunch and an opportunity to learn about the birds, mammals and trees of the Hastings Reserve! You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions about the natural history, geology and people that shaped the Reserve. As a fundraiser for Hastings we are requesting a minimum donation of $25 per person, $10 per child under twelve. (family rate $65; 2 adults & 2 kids under twelve) This event is open to the public but space is limited to 25 people so reserve your spot today! Hastings Natural History Reserve It goes pretty fast- this is real time for processing an acorn. About 15% of the acorns had insect damage and were discarded.

Hastings Natural History Reserve Kat Anderson has a book out on how the native people here used the oak woodlands of California. Acorns were a staple item in their diet. I gathered about 25 pounds of acorns and I am going to make acorn cookies. Today I shelled about half. Photos and video to follow

Hastings Natural History Reserve I added an album on the new book by one of the long-term researchers at Hastings- Jerry Powell. Jerry leads the annual butterfly count.

Lisa-Natalie Anjozian Loved my time at Hastings...collecting seed, measuring grasses at the test farm, and living in the cabin on the hill. Paradise near the Pacific.

Michael Jones So many lupins......so little time. This is a lupin angel...like a snow angel, but the fragrance. Everyone always says "Grape Kool-Aid".....like that is a bad thing!

Each year for a decade, Dr. Jerry Powell leads a group of dedicated volunteer butterfly counters. They walk the same routes each year, generally along roads or trails and identify, sometimes capture to check, and record the numbers of each species of butterfly seen. You would be welcome to attend. Bring sturdy boots, a... pack with water and lunch, and be ready to spend the day outside no matter the weather. A hike of 2-3 miles is involved.Read More
