Carolina Youth Development Center Freedom School students from Carolina Youth Development Center and Metanoia celebrated National Day of Social Action on July 13. The rally began at 10 a.m. with energetic dancing, motivational cheering, and storytelling; a celebration called Harambee, Swahili for “let’s pull together”.

Following Harambee, students rang...ing in age from 10-18 heard speeches from Clay Middleton of Senator Clyburn’s office and Natalia Cales, founder of Carolina Empowerment Group, Inc., an organization focused on educating the community about HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, and teen pregnancy.
After lunch, the children enjoyed a variety of competitive events, including double-dutch jump roping, sack races and water relays. Face painters and the Chick-fil-A cow were also on hand.

Freedom Schools, established by the Children’s Defense Fund, operate in more than 70 sites across the United States. Designed to help children excel and believe in themselves, Freedom Schools focus on literacy, cultural heritage, parental involvement, servant leadership and social action. Charleston’s National Day of Social Action is part of a larger nation-wide day of awareness events.
