If you're in Charlotte, join us this Saturday for the International Day of Climate Action or check www.350.org for an action taking place in a city nearest you.
The Midwood Park Community Gardeners in the Plaza-Midwood Neighborhood will host activities between 12:00 and 5:00 at the neighborhood Fall Crawl Festival. The ...nationally known children’s book author, Gail Haley, will be present with a large "Tree of Life" tapestry and a pan of non-toxic paint. Adults will be asked to take a pledge to improve our environment and children will use painted footprints to form leaves on the Tree of Life. Gail will also have her large "Green Man" puppet who will walk in the neighborhood Halloween Parade with Clean Air Carolina's Clean Air Polar Bear.A "green" storytelling tent for children will be set up and information on 350.org and local environmental organizations/websites will be given to festivalgoers. At 3:50 p.m. the music program will be paused briefly for an announcement about the International Day of Climate Action--what it means, how one can get involved. At 4:30 p.m. we will assemble as many people as we can in the park and take pictures with 350.org banners and other signs from groups working to stop climate change. Carolina Clean Air, the Piedmont Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Team and Greenpeace are helping organize these activities. To get involved contact June Blotnick at june@cleanaircarolina.org.
Time:12:00PM Saturday, October 24th

By now you probably know Duke Energy wants to raise your electric bill by eighteen percent, but did you realize that's nearly $200 a year?! Even worse, over 13.5% of the rate increase will cover costs such as the dirty Cliffside coal plant, now under construction west of Charlotte. And, 4.5% of the rate increase has a...lready been approved for the rising costs of coal. While other utility companies are shutting coal plants down and cutting customer's power bills, Duke Energy wants to continue building its global warming machine at Cliffside and raise our rates to pay for it.
North Carolina residents are ready to move ahead toward a clean energy future with renewable sources of power and real energy efficiency programs. If Duke Energy builds more coal plants, we'll suffer with more air pollution, more mercury in our waterways and fish, and more global warming.
Let's stand together and tell the NC Utilities Commission to not let Duke Energy waste our money! The cost is too high.
CCAC is hosting a Community Pot Luck picnic on Thursday, September 3 from 6:30pm-9:00pm at our office (1801 N Tryon Street, Charlotte) to gather and prepare for the upcoming Cliffside Rate Hike hearing. RSVP to let us know you can join us for the pot luck picnic and don't forget to bring a yummy dish to share!

Hundreds turned out to talk about an air quality permit for a controversial power plant expansion in Rutherford County. The permit is for a new coal-fired boiler at Duke Energy's Cliffside Plant. The permit would classify the generator as a "minor" source of pollution...
