Stiltasanas
The Carpetbag Brigade’s vocabulary of acrobatic stilt work
Stiltasanas are the pure technique base for the acrobatic stiltwork as practiced by The Carpetbag Brigade. Acrobatic Stiltwalking has been at the core of The Carpetbag Brigade’s evolution and international success. Directors Jay Ruby and Kristen Greco have created diverse techniques and exercises to prepare the body for the intense physical impact of stilts and simultaneously developed a way of integrating a sense of theatrical aesthetics into the teaching of their work.
Preparatory work includes core strength and balance building through the administration of exercises from ashtanga yoga and pilates. Body mind centering exercises are used to evolve the sensitivity and movement patterning of the participants.
Specific stilt skills taught can include lifts, falls, partner exercises, still point encounters, stick work, groundwork, and geometrics. Eventual work with choreography, character and dynamic narrative can occur with longer workshop and seminar settings.
Jay Ruby is the Director and Founder of The Carpetbag Brigade, an international physical theater company that evolves and synthesizes the overlapping worlds of circus, theater and dance. He has studied acrobatic stilts with David Clarkson of Australia’s Stalker Theatre, Butoh Ritual Dance with Diego Pinon of Mexico, Contact Improvisation with Steve Paxton and Physical Theater with Roberta Carreri of Denmark’s Odin Teatret.
