Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and leading experts will discuss the economic and public health implications of antibiotic resistance and the connection to food animal production. The economic burden of resistant infections on the American healthcare system is measurable -- in 2008, the Institute of Medicine reported that... antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including MRSA, cost the U.S. $4-5 billion a year. The CDC estimates that two million Americans contract resistant infections and out of those, 90,000 die.
