ChalkItUp A program that combines an early warning system with personal guidance and support may be the right formula for preventing students from dropping out of high school. Should Oregon high schools, with a 68 percent graduation rate, consider adopting a strategy of striking early and making better personal connections with students?

ChalkItUp A recent study by an Oregon State University researcher finds that Oregon home-based child care providers are exposing kids to too much television and too little activity. Two thirds of the providers serving children up to age 5 leave the television on all day. Should the state further regulate television in the homes of Oregon child-care providers?

Step 1) turn off TV.
Step 2) do something else (look at books, color, play board games, run around outside, play with blocks...).
Ultimately, of course, we want kids that CHOOSE to not watch TV - and that means not normalizing them to a lifestyle that expects excessive consumption of mindless programming.

PPS needs to reform their board election rules. Right now, money rules - if you don't believe that, go check out the campaigns of Pam Knowles and Scott Bailey. The information is freely available through OreStar. We're talking 30k to get a seat on the school board. Is that democracy or oligarchy?
Is it really a "student vote" if their vote ... See Moredoesn't count? How about putting a teacher representative, Title 1 parent rep, at-large community rep, one person from the business community (preferably small business, not PBA folks that are anti-66/67), and professional educators on the board?

Great suggestions Kenneth!

Sarah - are you saying that Forest Grove is breaking the law by having an official voting student member on their board?

www.oregonlive.com
The superintendents and teachers unions of both Sherwood and Salem-Keizer school districts have agreed in writing to take part in Oregon's precedent-breaking initiatives to improve schools if the state wins a federal "Race to the Top" award.

Yes, let's get more districts on board, and let's add initiatives to expand online learning statewide, to expand Mandarin (and other foreign language) immersion programs, and to create a Go Global High School Study Abroad. Let's make our state's proposal really innovative and competitive for funding.

ChalkItUp A survey by Public Agenda finds that the major reason most students do not finish college is that they cannot sustain the strain of trying to juggle work with school. Most students who quit try to pay for college on their own, without scholarships, financial aid or help from parents. What can Oregon and national leader...s do to help more students finish their college studies?

ChalkItUp State leaders are alarmed that a significantly smaller share of high school graduates from rural areas go on to state universities compared to those from urban counties. Rural students are more likely to have parents who earn low incomes and lack college education. Should Oregon be doing more to help rural high school graduates go to college?

ChalkItUp If money is one way we show what we value, does this suggest Oregon really appreciates the work of its school principals?

www.oregonlive.com
The vast majority of Oregon principals now earn between $80,000 and $105,000 a year. That's a lot of money. But then again, it's a big job -- and an important one.
