That's Rentertainment Sight & Sound magazine asked their critics what their favorite DVD releases of 2009 were. Hit the link to read the results. I'll try to make sure we have as many as possible at Renter...

Ask a film fan what the most exciting films they discovered in 2009 were, and the chances are that their list will include as many old films revived on DVD as new cinema releases. Despite the DVD industry ...

That's Rentertainment Only a handful of DVDs were released this week and it looks like even fewer will be coming in next week. The studios will pick up the pace a bit once the holidays are over. The biggest titles this week are: "Jennifer’s Body", "9" (Produced by Tim Burton), "Paranormal Activity", and "Perfect Getaway" (w/Steve Zahn, Mila... Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant & Kiele Sanchez) -- all four are available on both DVD and BluRay.

yeah, I'm pretty much in denial about the whole 9 musical thing. Just going to pretend I've never heard of it

Some of the best documentaries of 2009 hardly seemed to exist. "What's the matter with Kansas," based on a best-seller, is still awaiting its fifth vote at IMDb. "The Beaches of Agnes," a luminous film by the New Wave pioneer Agnes Varda, grossed $127,605. ...

That's Rentertainment There were three big releases this week: "All About Steve" (w/Sandra
Bullock, Thomas Haden Church and Bradley Cooper), "District 9" and
"Extract" (dir: Mike Judge, w/Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck and Mila
Kunis). Also, three somewhat less big releases this week: "It Might Get
Loud" (w/Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White), "(5...00) Days of Summer"
(w/Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and "Beyond a Reasonable
Doubt" (w/Michael Douglas, Jesse Metcalfe and Amber Tamberlyn). All six
titles came in on both DVD and BluRay.

That's Rentertainment Four more blockbusters made it to DVD (and BluRay) this week: "G-Force" (Disney), "The Hangover" (w/Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis), "Inglourious Basterds" (w/Brad Pitt and Eli Roth, dir: Quentin Tarantino), and "Taking Woodstock" (directed by Ang Lee). Pat has written good reviews of both The Hangover ...and Inglourious Basterds at Smile Politely in his From the Box article this week (www.smilepolitely.com/arts/category/from_the_box/). G-force gets a less than stellar 4.8/10 over at IMDB but with a tagline that reads "Gadgets, Gizmos, Guinea Pigs" I'm not sure they could have expected much more (I know, everyone loves guinea pigs). I watched Taking Woodstock (directed by U of I graduate Ang Lee) over the weekend and thought it was a great alternative take on the Woodstock phenomenon with plenty of nods to the original film. The reconstruction of the time period was incredible.

My wife cries at the end of almost every movie. It's really cute. I grabbed my camera to capture this moment right after we finished Return of the Jedi. Note: I love my wife to death! She was okay after about 25 minutes. She laughed when she saw this video.

That's Rentertainment It's a huge week for huge films: "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (with all the usual Hogwarts cast of characters), "Julie & Julia" (w/Meryl Streep and Amy Adams), "Public Enemies" (w/Johnny Depp, directed by Michael Mann) and "World's Greatest Dad" (w/Robin Williams, directed by Bobcat Goldthwait of "Shakes th...e Clown" fame). Also new this week is "Paperback Dreams", a documentary about independent booksellers and the people who love them. "The Cove" is a must-see but disturbing documentary about the regular mass killing of bottlenose dolphins in the town of Taiji, Japan. And, with the release of "McLeod's Daughters" (the original movie that inspired the eight-season Australian TV series), we can definitively say we have all things McLeod.

Well, I'm thinking that could be arranged. But now we have to do it offline. ;)

I do know we are going to see Sherlock Holmes on Christmas Day. Not sure that's your cup of tea. We're going to see how ridiculous it really is. Sara loves SH but it isn't counting on much for this instantiation.

That's Rentertainment The big three this week are "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" (w/Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria and Ricky Gervais), "Paper Heart" (w/Charlene Yi and Michael Cera) and "Terminator Salvation" (aka T4). Criterion has released Arnaud Desplechin's "A Christmas Tale". A bit late to coin...cide with the GEO's action, we got "Taylor Chain (a Story in a Local Union)"
-- a two-part documentary chronicling the gritty realities of a
seven-week strike at small chain factory in Indiana in the early 1980s.
And, we got a box of international films from Facets including three
that start with the letter J: Janosik, Judex, and Jupon Rouge.

Macy).... Criterion released "Gomorrah" (on both DVD and BluRay) and "The Golden Age of Television" (only on DVD). I just watched "American Artifact", a documentary about the history of the American rock poster... it's great!
