On of the great pleasures of touring Europe in the summer is singing in the fantastic acoustics of historically important churches from centuries we don't have at home. This one, St. Nicholas Collegiate, dates from 1320. Columbus worshipped here in 1477...

The church was jammed. The audience was completely still and extremely intent - and totally rambunctious at the end.Seems like they loved us - and vice versa...

As we boarded our plane to Frankfurt, and even after arriving in Galway, we were still flying high from the four amazing days of Chanticleer in Sonoma, our summer workshop for adult choral singers (scroll down to see it.) The final concert was this past Sunday, and we must say that it rocked...

There was of course one obvious way to celebrate our arrival in the land of Guinness at about l0pm last night after flying from San Francisco to Frankfurt to Dublin and taking a bus from there to here.

Our fourth almost annual workshop for adult choral singers takes place this week. 63 singers have joined us on the campus of Sonoma State University for four days of music making...

We've finished up The Divine Orlando, and are preparing to go up to Sonoma tomorrow for our summer workshop for adult choral singers (this year a record number of participants - over 70!)We are reminded that it was only last month that we were in China...

No sooner were we back from China than it was time for our annual gala - an elegant but relaxed evening to see our friends and supporters and tell our stories...

Chanticleer was founded to explore the beautiful and complex vocal music of the Renaissance. Perhaps the greatest composer of the period was Orlando di Lasso, known as “The Divine.” So respected was he, that over 2000 of his works survive to this day...

Now that we're safely back, we'll start putting up some of our favorite candid photos from our time in China over on Facebook.Enjoy!Album 1Album 2

Our first event in Hong Kong was a walk across the street to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre for an a cappella workshop which the presenter had organized...

We received beautiful bouquets - roses and orchids -during the huge applause at the end of our concert in the Shenzen Concert Hall. A great hall - and what an acoustic ! really superb- as it turns out by Yasuhisa Toyota, the acoustician who did LA's Disney Hall...

On the move again for the three hour flight to Shenzen- our last stop in mainland China. On the way to the airport we stop off in the artistic zone of 798 -former warehouses and factories which have been made into galleries and studios for artists...

We had been very much looking forward to visiting the Shanghai Conservatory, as western musicians have for many decades. They graciously welcomed us for a morning there there before our plane to Beijing this afternoon...

This is getting to be quite a lot of fun! A big crowd tonight in Shanghai, many of whom had been last night as well. You couldn't wish for a warmer and more vociferous response...

It happened again! Our concert in Shanghai with The Shanghai Quartet was greeted with clapping and yelling and general carrying on...

Your great reception reminds me of the enthusiastic greeting that the New Jersey Choral Society and numerous other groups received last summer in both Beijing and Shanghai, when we performed as part of the Pre-Olympic Cultural Arts Festival under the baton of Eric Dale Knapp. The audience in Beijing went especially wild when we sang parts of the "... It was an amazing experience for our combined choruses - 540 voices strong.

After a day of taking in all the sensations of Shanghai (including of course many fascinating culinary things) we set out bravely to present our particular version of ensemble vocal music to a mainland Chinese audience for the first time...

Looks like lots of other tours, but remember we just flew 13 hours non stop from San Francisco and got through the airport in Shanghai in an amazingly short time, considering that announcements seemed to be indicating people arriving from the West Coast might be quarantined...

Chanticleer is Shanghai bound!
