The Office of Cultural Affairs City Gallery at Waterfront Park
Aesthetic Sanctuary, works by Michael Krajewski and Justice Littlejohn
November 20, 2009 - January 3, 2010
Michael Krajewski is a self taught artist of Chinese and Polish heritage. Through his art, Krajewski seeks to portray and evoke strong emotions which mirror passions in his own life. He is in favor of the words "radical evolution" when speaking of his work. The artist states, "My work is about sharing intimacy and being spontaneous at times." Krajewski can be inspired by almost anything; the bubbles on a shower curtain, the idea of a body in motion, a sound, dried paint on his hands, his dreams or nightmares, the interaction with what is around him, taking it in and reinventing it. Krajewski currently resides in Columbia, SC.
Justice Littlejohn is a graduate of Wofford College with a MAT in Art Education from USC. He has also studied at Western Carolina University's intensive summer MFA program with a number of national artists. He has taught in Columbia, SC public schools, and his work has been exhibited in galleries there as well as Atlanta, Charleston, Asheville and New Mexico. He currently resides in Greenville, SC. The artist describes his work as "impulsive, spontaneous, and full of energy, yet contemplative." He gains inspiration in everything he sees and "scribbles" the world; creating works of art that go beyond the external variables he is presented with.

Stephen Fry
November 6-25, 2009
Stephen was reared in Southern California, and he spent much time visiting the area's many art galleries and museums, particularly the J. Paul Getty Museum. He frequented its collection of the old Masters, where he spent hours studying the ethereal "light from within" techniques of Rembrandt while many contemporary works captured his imagination as well. Fry began painting at the ripe age of five when his kindergarten teacher viewed his first painting. Encouraging the impressionable young Fry, she told him he could be an accomplished artist one day. Today several of Fry's pieces hang on the walls of this early critic, turned collector. Fry sold his first painting at the Simi Valley, California (Invitation only) art show at the age of 15. Shortly afterwards, Fry was offered a full scholarship at the prestigious California Institute of The Arts.

The paintings in this latest collection are inspired by Ellis' memories of his childhood in New Orleans. With a primitive style that is reminiscent of the Outsider Art movement, Ellis tells the stories of everyday African American life in the Deep South.
