I've written more than a dozen news stories and columns about archaeological work in the Lowcountry, but I've never wielded a trowel.

Dear Ms. McKinney,

Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience you experienced during Museum Day.

Last year we welcomed just over 50 guests for the one-day event, however, to our surprise, this year we admitted nearly 160 Smithsonian members (plus 1 guest) for a total of around 320 visitors. By 12 noon, we had almost completely booked all house tours up to the last (4:30) tour of the day. ... Read More

Due to the fragility of this historic house museum, there are strict capacity guidelines on the number of visitors permitted both in the house and on the premises at one time. House Tours offered on the hour have a maximum capacity of 30 people, and the total number of people on site at one time cannot exceed 300 people.

We did undertake efforts to fully communicate this to all guests at the time and offered grounds only passes as well as complimentary admission passes to those individuals we were unable to accommodate.

After being advised by Smithsonian of your difficulty, we emailed you a complimentary admission pass for up to five people; the pass has no expiration date.

Sincerely,

Natalie Baker
