Families will have the chance to join a real-life Indiana Jones adventure with the Clay Center’s new Archaeology Day family fun day on Saturday, Nov. 7, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests can meet an archaeologist, create “artifacts,” hear stories and more.
Throughout the day, explore the more than 200 rare artifacts in the exhi...bit Lost Kingdoms of the Nile: Nubian Treasures from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. In Exploration Station, kids can write their names in hieroglyph, check out models of a prehistoric Nubian hut and irrigation system and more.
Also premiering Nov. 7 is the all-new giant screen film Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs where viewers travel back thousands of years for a scientific journey into the world of mummies. This fascinating film unravels some of the mysteries of the ancient royal mummies, including how they were embalmed and where they were hidden. Film show times are noon, 1, 3 and 4 p.m.
The complete Archaeology Day schedule of activities includes:
•11 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Corn grinding
•11 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Puzzle pot cart mini demos
•11 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Create a cartouche
•11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – Traditional African folk tales with Bill Hairston
•Noon to 4 p.m. – P inch pots and petroglyphs
•Noon to 4 p.m. – Meet a flint knapper
•12:30 p.m. – Meet archaeologist Craig Ferrell
•1, 2 and 3 p.m. – Milton’s Marvels science demonstration – Dig It! Fun with Archaeology
•2:30 p.m. – Meet Chief Cornstalk
Visit the gift shop, and choose from a selection of Egyptian jewelry boxes and umbrellas. Learn more about pharaohs, pyramids and mummies with a variety of educational books also available for purchase.
All Archaeology Day activities, excluding film and planetarium shows, are included with gallery admission, which is free for Clay Center members, $5.50 for children and $7 for adults. Friends of Clay Center’s favorite fall fundraiser is back with new brews, live entertainment and a rousing cornhole tournament. The sixth annual Oktoberfest event takes place Saturday, Sept. 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park. All proceeds benefit the Clay Center’s educational programs.
In addition to enjoyin...g great food and beer, guests can listen to live music from contemporary acoustic/electric trio Souvenir. The cornhole tournament is returning after a successful debut at last year’s event. The first 16 teams to arrive at 1 p.m. will be signed up to play. Form a team, create a fun name, put on your team uniform and compete to win prizes, including cash.
Admission is $25 per person at the gate, which includes beer tastings and a commemorative Oktoberfest cup (while supplies last). The separate cornhole entry fee is $15 per person with two people per team. Food is not included in admission.
Oktoberfest is sponsored by Francis, Nelson & Brison, PLLC with additional support provided by City of Charleston, Kanawha Stone/Terradon, Mountaineer Packaging, Star USA Federal Credit Union, Valley West Veterinary Hospital and West Virginia Power.
