Iris Magazine: Iris Magazine is the Center's award-winning, nationally acclaimed magazine for thinking young women, at U.Va. and beyond. After spending her life trying on several looks—from photocopied newsletter for the U.Va. Women's Studies Program to national journal for women, Iris re-debuted September 1, 2007 as a magazine for and about thinking young women.

Reconceived after 27 years of publication, Iris seeks to celebrate and empower young women through provocative articles, essays, and fiction pieces that are uplifting, inclusive, and literate.

If you'd like to receive a free copy or otherwise need to reach us, please email irismagazine@gmail.com.

If you are interested in submitting to Iris, we are currently accepting submissions only for our online site - see details under Submissions on the new site.

Sexual and Domestic Violence Services (SDVS): Sexual and Domestic Violence Services (SDVS) educates students, staff, and faculty at the University of Virginia about intimate violence and its impact on our community. We provide support to survivors of these crimes, work to strengthen the University’s responses and policies so that all victims are treated fairly and appropriately, empower women to resist abuse, and empower men to embrace their role as allies in this work, so that the violence comes to an end.

For more information and resources visit theSDVS web page

Counseling: Since 1990, the Women's Center has offered individual, couples, and group counseling services to University of Virginia students, faculty, and staff, as well as to members of the Charlottesville community. Counseling is offered for both men and women individually, as well as couples. The counseling staff at the Women's Center is composed of advanced masters students and doctoral degree candidates in counselor education.

The Women's Center offers free and confidential support groups for UVa students, faculty, staff and Charlottesville community members. For more information and participation, call 982-2252.

Men's Leadership Project (MLP): The Men's Leadership Project at the University of Virginia is an innovative community-based leadership development and mentoring program designed to build and reinforce authentic and responsible leadership capacities of both undergraduate men and elementary school boys. MLP accomplishes this mission by training and pairing a diverse group of undergraduate men with a select group of fifth grade boys at Walker Upper Elementary School and a select group of sixth grade boys at Burley Middle School, both in Charlottesville, VA.

MLP is especially committed to understanding a wide range of masculinities, fostering a gender-aware perspective on leadership development and mentoring, and encouraging active participation in respectful, healthy, pro-social and anti-violent community roles for those who identify as men and boys.

For more information visit the MLP Website!

Diversity and Advocacy: The Diversity and Advocacy Program teaches students how to create change. Interns are part of the Center's core staff and work on the website and print publications; coordinate the legal clinic; and organize events. Summer study also offers UVa students the opportunity to see how many women in other countries meet the many challenges before them.

There are three components to the Diversity and Advocacy Program:

Internship Program
Center Events
International Initiatives

Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP): Co-sponsored with the Curry School of Education, the Young Women Leaders program is a free year-long mentoring program that focuses on promoting middle school girls' leadership abilities. Local 7th grade girls who would like to participate are paired with U.Va undergraduate women to work on exploring how women and girls can best reach their leadership potential.

If you are a former Big Sister and want to stay involved in YWLP or a graduate student interested in becoming involved, consider applying to be a facilitator or trainer. Trainers lead weekly groups of Big Sisters in training and help teach how to best reach and advise a middle school girl. Facilitators lead weekly mentoring groups in area middle schools, keep school contacts informed about the group, and ensure that Big and Little Sisters are making connections. Challenge yourself to make a difference in the lives of both college women and middle school girls by applying to be a leader in YWLP!
