Four lucky hockey fans, including 56-year-old Rick Abbott, guaranteed themselves a memorable New Year, as they each took home a brand new 2009 Chevrolet Traverse Crossover as part of the third annual, international award-winning million-dollar giveaway, the Chevrolet Traverse Million Dollar Shootout. The event was televised live nationally on TSN during the first intermission of the 2009 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP round-robin game featuring Canada vs. USA.
Rick, a resident of Quesnel, B.C., was joined by two shooters – son Derek Abbott, 21, and longtime family friend Owen Kirby, 23 – at centre ice, where they each had 15 seconds to shoot 10 pucks into an open net. Their combined 16 goals scored were enough for the trio, plus a randomly selected World Juniors tournament attendee, to each win a Chevrolet Traverse Crossover, for a total of four vehicles given away.
Rick also had the chance to shoot for $1 million. He scored 13 goals into an open net from the far blue line in 24 seconds, falling two short of the required 15 goals to win the $1 million prize in a one-time payout.

On Tuesday morning (December 30), Rick honed his wrist shot in a special one-hour practice session. In multiple attempts from the far blue line, Rick's best results were 18, 16 and 15 goals (three times) - all of which would be enough for him to take home the $1 million prize tomorrow night.

B.C.’s Rick Abbott to Shoot for $1 Million in TSN’s Chevrolet Traverse Million Dollar Shootout Contest.
He’s 5’10” and 195 lbs., shoots left and has honed his wrist shot playing recreation hockey for the past eight years. Now, the only thing separating 56 year old electrician Rick Abbott of Quesnel, B.C. from a cool million dollars is scoring 15 goals in 24 seconds as this year’s participant in TSN’s third annual, international award-winning million-dollar giveaway, the Chevrolet Traverse Million Dollar Shootout. As part of the contest, Rick will also have the chance to win up to four new Chevrolet Traverse Crossovers.
The event will air live nationally in High Definition on TSN HD on New Year’s Eve (Wednesday, December 31) during the first intermission of the IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP broadcast featuring Canada vs. USA (game starts at 7:30 p.m. ET).
