Freedom Friday: Youth Summit // "Violence in Schools: Who's to blame?"
At DYN’s second Freedom Friday youth summit, a group of students tackled the issue of violence in schools.
These middle school students explore the root of these school shootings, debate the motivation of the shooters and who’s to blame all while building their own perspective on responsibility to themselves and those around them.

Our 6th Graders were part of a Record Company Class where they learned how to reclaim their voices, and present a clear picture of how they really see themselves.

Hi Digital Youth Network,

I just wanted to make sure that all of your members were aware of the 2008 $2M HASTAC/MacArthur Digital Media and Learning Competition.

This year we have introduced a new award, our Young Innovators award, targeted to applicants aged 18-25. We want to help young innovator's get their ideas from the "garage" to implementation.

Awards are $5000-$30,000. Deadline is October 15, 2008.

Check out the full details at http://www.dmlcompetition.net.

And follow us on Twitter @ http://twitter.com/dmlComp

I hope some of you that have those ideas cooking, will consider applying! You can email me at mandy.dailey@duke.edu with questions.

Hi there. I am working on a multimedia project that focuses on AIDS in Black and Latina women. We def. want a youth voice in there. Wondering if we, SoJust Media, could partner with DYN?

Right now, this is a labor of love...we are all working for free. But our 3 'leads' have quite a bit of experience to share with your kids (not that you don't!) if you are interested: a television reporter/producer, radio producer/documentarian/pr professional and me, a web producer/journalist.

Lemme know what you think.

The Digital Youth Network (DYN) supports youth in developing the skills and perspective needed to exist as discerning consumers of media as well as responsible and informed media producers. By creating clear pathways for youth to explore their interests through new media and technology, students are supported in their growth as fluid producers and critics in a media rich age.

DYN not only stresses that students gain a wide range of experience as media producers, but that they use their access to empower themselves and their community.
