On June 14th - To put action into words and go out to the land of Black Oak's eco-campus. We will be erecting the deck of a yurt, finishing up the chicken coop, and putting the final layer of lime plaster and a tile mosaic on the natural construction cob wall. Catch a ride on a bio-diesel school bus down to the land at 9am at 3241 Federal Street. (Close to the Red and Green Line's 35th stop), and returning around 5pm. Students and children are encouraged to come also.

We are happy to announce that Chef Tsadakeeyah from Majani 310 will be catering a delicious lunch at Black Oaks land on Sunday for a suggested donation of $2. In keeping with sustainability ideals, please pack out what you pack in. That means please bring your own eating utensils and plates to cut down on the waste of paper products.

Also, the land is in the middle of the savanna so there are bugs. Please bring bug spray with you. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you! Email me with any questions!

Grounded Design Studio Community Building for Re-skilling
Black Oaks Center for Sustainable Renewable Living (BOC) is looking forward to hosting you at our CommUnity Building day on May 30-31st. We are calling all hands and calling all feet for this weekend event. You don't have to camp at the site, but you and your family are welcome to pitc...h a tent on our 40 acre savanna for the night during the event. Here's what's happening:

Sustainable Building Tract: Cob Wall Construction
Lets make cob! We will be putting a fortifying layer of cob over the earth bag entrance wall we constructed last fall together that wonderful weekend at the Black Oaks center. We will be making the materials from scratch-- clay and sand and straw, masterfully mixed with our feet. Learn the feeling of the recipe, talk about what makes a good mix; empower yourself to make cob on your own! This project will be led by the wonderful Anna Wolfson. We are also needing to put a "roof" on the top of the cob wall to keep it from weathering. Tile or thin landscaping tiles are the best things for it. Does anyone have access to those types of materials they could donate?

Other projects scheduled for that day:

Sustainable Agriculture Tract:
Make way for the Chickens!!!
Jennifer, a certified permaculture design architect will be leading us in making a new home for the birds that are in incubation at 3 schools in Chicago. The Betty Shabazz International Charter School 6th grade Sankofa class has invested their raised earnings in an incubator and fertile eggs to replenish the fowl that was lost over the winter. Help us to plan and structure a prey resistant, new home for the chickens, ducks, guinea, quails and partridge we plan to have at BOC. The old chicken coop will be dismantled and a garden will be placed there.

Care for the Black Oaks
Join us in continuing to care for the endangered dwarfed black oaks and the savanna. This winter was hard on the black oak savanna. Many trees fell to harsh winds and ice. Debris was strewn about. Come help care for the savanna and the endangered dwarfed black oaks by cleaning and clearing debris and planting acorns. Even the fallen leaves are a good source of mulch for the garden.

Hang out in the Garden
We have been busy making newspaper pots and planting cold hardy seedlings that are ready for the gardens. Help us construct straw bale raised beds and create innovative, safe ways to keep the moles and voles from intruding on the garden

Renewable Energy Tract
On Sat. April 25th, a team of wood cutters took to a fallen tree that was blocking one of the eco-campus roads. We are starting to stock pile the wood. Please join us as we continue to clear the savanna of fallen trees while we store fuel for cooking and heating. The fallen black oaks are a renewable source of energy at BOC. Help us stock wood for the stove while clearing the land to reduce the risk of uncontrolled fires.

Sustainable Renewable Living Tract
In cultivating a culture of C’s: comm-unity, collaboration, conservation, collectivity, please bring food, talents, information and a open mind and heart to share in building community. A collective pot luck family dinner will be held at 4 p.m. after the work is done on Saturday. Please bring the following dishes or beverages to share

* Vegetarian/Vegan
* Green vegetables
* Salad
* Beans
* Grains
* Baked Casseroles
* Healthy beverages
* Healthy Desserts
* Fish
* Healthy Poultry

We will be showing the movie “Taking Root”, the story of Wangari Mathai and the Kenyan Green Belt Movement will be shown along with dialog following about whole systems thinking to make paradigm shifts.

DIRECTIONS
Directions to the Black Oaks Center on the Savanna:
For an approximate map of the location, click here, or download typed directions from Chicago here.
Please Note! The entrance is just west of the intersection shown on this map and east of the Guiding Star Church that is located on 3000 South Road. (3000 South is the name of the road and not an address!)

PREPARATION:
Wear light colored clothing with a hat or a scarf to cover from head to toe. We will be making up a special aromatherapy concoction to keep insects, including the brown dog ticks off. We will do inspections before everyone leaves. Note: Brown dog ticks DO NOT CAUSE LYME DISEASE!!!!!
