DEERHOOF

Friday, October 17
DEERHOOF
EXPERIMENTAL DENTAL SCHOOL
FLYING
Tickets: $15
All Ages
Doors: 6pm / Show: 7pm

For almost fifteen years San Francisco’s Deerhoof has been creating a sound that mixes sugary melodies and an experimental spirit into sweetly challenging and utterly distinctive music. The band started out with just a drummer and guitarist but soon added singer and bass player Satomi Matsuzaki who, despite having no prior musical experience, used her beautiful voice to elevate the band’s sound. Deerhoof has attained an indie like royalty status, garnering a solid fan base and touring with such bands as The Flaming Lips and The Fiery Furnaces. They are currently on tour in support of their new album Offend Maggie, which was released this month and is already receiving attention from critics and fans.

Their label describes it this way – "While John Dieterich's acoustic guitar seems to channel Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure, Ed Rodriguez's electric conjures classic Townsend. Singer/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki (with drummer Greg Saunier on harmony vocal) uses the title track to tell a plaintive story in which telemarketing calls are a metaphor for unrequited love." While you probably didn’t expect a love song about telemarketing, it just goes to show that with Deerhoof, you’re never sure what kind of a story you’re going to get – only that it will be entertaining. Consistently engaging and always pushing the boundaries, Deerhoof will play October 17 at Metro.

This fall marks one of the busiest and most creative times in the history of The Smashing Pumpkins. Formed in Chicago in 1988, the pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continues to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation of music. Since their triumphant return to the stage in 2007, the Pumpkins have headlined some of the biggest events around the globe including the Reading Festival, Rock Am Ring, and the V fest. Earlier this year, the band was inducted into Hollywood’s RockWalk. On November 11, 2008, the band will release their first live DVD, If All Goes Wrong. The band commences their North American “20th Anniversary Tour” in November. With such a vast repertoire, the Pumpkins are coming prepared with two completely different nightly set lists for each venue with no songs being repeated over the course of the two night run. Expect all the hits and songs that have become the soundtracks to a generation, as well as special surprises throughout. The Pumpkins will play four shows at two different venues. Night #1 (Nov. 18 at The Chicago Theatre and Nov. 21 at The Auditorium) is being called “Black Sunshine” while night #2 (Nov. 19 at The Chicago Theatre and Nov. 22 at The Auditorium) will be dubbed “White Crosses.” Tickets go on sale Monday October 13 at 10AM at the theatres’ respective box offices, as well as through Ticketmaster.

HELLOGOODBYE

Sunday, November 16
HELLOGOODBYE
ACE ENDERS
PLAYRADIOPLAY!
NEVER SHOUT NEVER
Tickets: $15
All Ages
Doors: 6pm / Show: 7pm

If there’s one thing to expect from Hellogoodbye, it’s the unexpected. One day the band is hosting an on-stage house party, and the next, each member—vocalist/guitarist Forrest Kline, keyboardist Joe Marro, bassist Travis Head and drummer Chris Profeta—is dressed up as a different piece of fruit. Intensely synth-sational and gratifyingly groovy, Hellogoodbye has spent the last three years perfecting their unbridled live show and booty-shaking jams. Their first self-titled EP on Drive Thru Records was an instant hit, scoring 750K downloads and eventually selling more than 125K copies.

After appearing on MTV2’s The Real World Austin and winning MTV2’s Dew Circuit Breakout contest in 2005, the band toured extensively. Their long awaited debut album Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs was released in 2006 to the delight of fans and critics like, reaching lucky #13 on the Billboard charts. Since the release of Z! A! V! D!, Hellogoodbye has toured extensively playing to sold-out audiences and making friends and fans all over the world. What’s next for Hellogoodbye? The band is cracking the whip on a new album and touring. Don’t miss their Chicago date at Metro on Sunday November 16. Tickets are $15. The show is all ages and starts at 6:30pm.

We're playing this weekend for our first time and couldn't be more excited. This is the holy grail for unsigned bands...looking forward to tearing up the stage.

FUCK THE METRO!!!
by Mitch at 8:14pm on October 6th, 2008
The metro is a bunch of shit. The security staff are the biggest dicks ive ever seen. A few of my friends weren't even allowed in despite legitimate id's. After the bassnectar show i talked to multiple people who had been kicked out for no reason by security and werent even given an explanation. I know i will never go back and you should not support such a shitty venue. FUCK THE METRO!
Metro Security SUCKS!!!!
by Kristina at 6:14am on September 28th, 2008
This place SUCKS when it comes to security. If you want to spend money just to get denied at the door for no reason. Then after you FINALLY get in you would have thought the damn President was in the room with secret service men everywhere. Not a chill environment ...too many people on power trips OVER doing their jobs and wasting people’s money & time!
I LOVE METRO!
by David at 5:53am on May 13th, 2008
I love Metro! Worked there as a DJ and sometimes VJ in the 80's. My band also played there a lot in the 80's. Metro holds a deep and special place in my heart, it is in my personal history, and thusly will always be a part of my soul. I will return there someday.
