Criterion works with filmmakers and scholars to present each film as its maker would want it seen and published in an edition that will deepen the viewer’s understanding. Stump Library at Saint Xavier University Someone asked about the origin of the phrase "playing in Peoria," the theme of this year's Illinois Library Association Conference. In a letter to the editor of the New York Times, one Peoria native said that the phrase originated in Vaudeville. Peoria had the reputation as being the hardest town in which to get a laugh, so any act that played in Peoria was sure to play, or succeed, anywhere else.
