The Morse Theatre For the first time in Chicago, Gerardo Perez, esteemed bandoneonist (the accordion-like instrument of the tango) will perform featuring the indigenous music of Uruguayan “Candombe”. Uruguayan “Candombe” is late 19th Century drum-based music originating among the African population and the country’s Creoles with some E...uropean influence. Candombe is tango’s grandparent, so to speak. It is the “mother” of “Milonga” (a faster dance rhythm than traditional tango), which is the direct sire of tango.

“Tango’s Two Cities” chronicles Perez’s lifelong relationship with this soulful music. Thus, this concert is both history and love story. At The Morse, Perez will lead the Alma de Tango Ensemble in a varied program featuring music, dance and poetry of both countries. These concerts promise to advance Chicagoans’ enjoyment of tango and their understanding of the spell it casts over all who cross its path.
