Adrian Are there performances everynight?
Chicago Symphony Orchestra at 8:52am June 26
We have performances 3-5 nights a week. Our downtwon season usually runs from mid-September to mid-June. The 09/10 season will begin on October 2, but the Orchestra will be in residence at Ravinia beginning in July.

David Rangel For the encore of yesterday's performance, Marc Elder said they were playing a piece by a Czech opera composer. Dvorak "played the viola when it was first played" and it was also "on the program when he came to Chicago". But he didn't say what it was. Anyone know? Thanks!

Chris Are you going to release the Bruckner 8th Symphony concert on Resound? You must!
Chicago Symphony Orchestra at 11:30am June 22
Those performances were amazing, weren't they? You may want to become a fan of CSO Resound for the latest updates on new releases. There was a thread going last week about what we should release from the Dvorak Festival.

Bob Meyer After a wonderful dinner at Terzo Piano in the Modern Wing of the Art Institute, we walked across the street to Orchestra Hall to end a perfect evening with the CSO and the Dvorak Festival. Patricia Racette and Rachel Barton Pine were amazing and received well-deserved huge ovations. As always, the CSO Chorus was spectacular with its intonation and "togetherness". They also were rewarded with a rousing ovation. How lucky we are to have such an organization in our city! We will never surrender our season tickets, especially with Muti coming.

Paul Missavage What an amazing orchestra! Have always enjoyed. Will be happy to hear live once again soon.

Cathy at 3:02am June 19
I was able to go all the time as the "house doc" in my Residency. Simply spectacular. Have to make it a priority again.

Michael Alisa Weilerstein showed so much passion while performing Dvorak's Cello Concerto. I'm not sure I've ever seen such an immense passion thrown into a concerto by a soloist.
Horacio at 11:19pm June 13
i could not keep my eyes off of her, she was mesmorizing, passionate and beyond anytihng that I could have expected.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Happy to welcome our colleagues to Chicago for the League of American Orchestras conference. We're looking forward to seeing you all at the concert tonight. Met Alisa Weilerstein last night and she is excited to play the Cello Concerto with the CSO.
Horacio at 11:41pm June 11
beyond the score was beyond anything that I could have expected or dreamed of, such an amzing way to really bring the music to a whole new level.
Chicago Symphony Orchestra at 8:59am June 15
So glad to hear you liked Beyond the Score. Next year, we're doing Mahler 4, Isle of the Dead and La Mer.

On Saturday, June 8, 2009, after first reminding us that Scherzo Capricosso means capricious joke, Sir Mark Elder took the CSO through a polished and most enjoyable performance of this fun-to-hear work. When you hear the harp you know you are in music heaven.
Janine Jansen was beyond words in her performance of the violin concerto, complementing each of the colorful sections of the orchestra with total command of her instrument. If it is possible to be ferocious yet sweet, she proved it can be done.
To end the concert, Elder and the CSO were in top form for the 7th Symphony, bringing out all the textures of the woodwinds, brass, and strings. And for those who may be curious about the mysterious numbering of the symphonies, the Dvorak Festival program guide has a handy listing on page 42. Thanks, CSO.... Read More
I can't wait for the next concert in the Festival!

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Another thing which discourages the student of music is the unwillingness of publishers to take anything but light and trashy music. European publishers are bad enough in that respect, but the American publishers are worse. No wonder American composers and musicians grow discouraged! Such a state of affairs should be a source of mortification to all truly patriotic Americans. –Antonin Dvořák, Harper's, Feb 1895

Nice cop out statement from the artistic sack of hammers known as Dvorak...boo hoo. I happen to love the guy as a composer, but what a whiner as a person.
For students today, try writing some music people actually want to hear, and then you have defined for yourself what is good music.
You have to love people who really think they can pontificate about and then define what constitutes good and bad music.
Listeners determine if music is good, not musicians, composers, teachers, or any record producers of any style of sound.
The composers, players, music teachers & producers are the music makers. Without them the listeners are dead. Without the listener, the music makers have no validation for their ego. Their artistic expression, so carefully crafted (well, sometimes not so carefully crafted), goes to waste.... Read More
I'm a simpleton on this fact: Music which impacts the soul and stirs the spirit comes in all forms; if it does these things, then it's good music.

Your idea that only listeners define good music is reductionistic. People also like what they are used to, and don't typically chance stepping out of the known. The same holds true for movies etc.: Just because lots of people liked Slumdog Millionaire, which follows commercial Hollywood narrative conventions, doesn't mean that fact makes it a good movie.

You do want to fix that typo, though.

Oops!
Matthew at 4:39pm June 4
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has a great tradition with music by Dvořák. They recorded excerpts of the "New World" Symphony under Frederick Stock in 1916! There are also recordings of the work under Kubelik, Reiner, and Giulini.

Given that the music of Antonin Dvorak has been a staple of the orchestral and chamber repertory for generations, and that the Czech composer and his works have come under exhaustive investigation by scholars ...

Once upon a time I sang an EVENSONG service in St Johns Chapel and did all 10 of the Dvorak Biblical Songs. This I was very proud of and felt I had contributed something very meaningful. Dvorak wrote all these songs after the death of his father. The songs are all from the Psalms and so beautiful.

I would like to. Its just isn't in my budget until school is over. And I don't know how it happened but none of my friends like classical music. The only one was my boyfriend and we parted 7 and a half years ago.
