I'm teaching two classes at this excellent conference. It's where I got my start!
2B - Majoring on the Minors: Writing Supporting Characters - Christa Parrish
In fiction, all characters are important. Are your supporting characters as memorable as your protagonist? Do they have a life, a past (outside the realm of the ...novel), quirks, flaws, noble traits, fears, aspirations, aches and pains, and joys? Do they ignite, impede, or showcase the protagonist’s growth? During this workshop, writers will spend time identifying their novel’s minor players, examining these characters’ purposes and exploring ways to make them multi-dimensional. We’ll also discuss “character economy,” working to identify places where supporting cast members can be cut or combined.
6B - Endurance: Pacing Your Novel from Beginning to End - Christa Parrish
One of the most challenging aspects of crafting a novel is pacing. Learn how to avoid sagging middles, the second chapter information dump, and uninspired dialogue. Keep your readers engaged by continually moving the action forward. Find ways to add tension to every page, and by doing so, keep the reader engaged from first page to final chapter.

If you have a work-in-progress, bring two chapters. A laptop is helpful but not required. We will be doing several writing exercises in class. After a brief discussion on "What Makes Great Fiction," and a review of the basic structure of a nove...l, we’ll explore the following topics:
1) Make A Scene: Crafting Your Novel One Scene at a Time. Breaking your novel’s longer chapters into bite-sized scenes can help keep your plot’s tension high and your reader’s interest higher. Examine the pieces that make a fabulous scene—setup, beats, turns, and emotional charges—while building around your characters’ actions and reactions.
2) Endurance: Pacing Your Novel from Beginning to End. One of the most challenging aspects of crafting a novel is pacing. Learn how to avoid sagging middles, the second chapter information dump, and uninspired dialogue. Keep your readers engaged by continually moving the action forward. Find ways to add tension to every page, and by doing so, keep the reader engaged from beginning to end.
3) The Majors and the Minors: Writing Characters. In fiction, all characters are important. Do all your characters have a past (outside the realm of the novel), quirks, flaws, noble traits, fears, aspirations, aches and pains and joys? Is your main character someone the reader cares about? Are your supporting characters as memorable as your protagonist? Do they ignite, impede, or showcase the protagonist’s growth? We’ll also discuss "character economy," working to identify places where supporting cast members can be cut or combined.

Home Another Way will be one of the “Good News” Dear Reader selections for the week of January 19th.
Dear Reader is an online book club. It’s free to register, and each week you’ll get a 5-minute excerpt from a different book (you can choose various genres, from non-fiction to business to teen, from mystery to romance ...to Good News), so by the end of the featured period you’ll have seen two or three chapters, more than enough to decide if you’ll want to pick up the entire book to read. There is also a forum where you can discuss the book with other readers, or *ahem* the author, should he or she decide to participate.
I will be involved with the Dear Reader forum next week, so if you’d like to ask questions about the book, please register for the forum and stop by to post your messages. I’ll be checking in daily - I hope! - so you won’t have to wait long for an answer.
Hope to see you over there from January 19th to January 24th.
Wanna chat with other readers - and me! - about Home Another Way?
