Volunteering Canterbury Do you know a young person (under 21 years) who has made an extraordinary contribution to our community? Why not nominate them for a Youth Volunteer Award? Volunteering Canterbury offers these awards to raise awareness about volunteering and to recognise the contributions made by local youth. Nomination forms can be downloaded from www.volcan.org.nz and nominations close on 6 November.

Volunteering Canterbury This week I'm continuing to look at youth volunteering. Like many people, young people find short-term, flexible volunteer positions attractive. Currently many agencies offer long-term volunteer positions as they need experienced Volunteers e.g. telephone counselling agencies. How do these groups attract young volunteers while meeting the mission of their group?

Volunteering Canterbury

Volunteering Canterbury Hi everyone! I've been spending the morning looking into how agencies can attract young volunteers. I need innovative ideas that don't involve big budgets or heaps of time to set up. Any ideas? Cindy

Thanks Fallon and Emma. Great comments. We agree with what you say.

While Volunteering Canterbury has some great positions for young people it needs more. To do this we have to help agencies to modify their current volunteer programmes to meet the needs of Volunteers wanting shorter term positions. This is a real challenge for these agencies and for us.

Volunteering Canterbury Many people think young people don't Volunteer but they do. Hear these Queensland young people talk about their Voluntary work.

Volunteering Canterbury Great concept from youtube!

Organisations advertise for volunteers to video the groups activities and post them on youtube. I didn't see any NZ groups advertising but couldn't see any reason why NZ groups couldn't do this. At any rate I thought the term Video Volunteer was great and I am sure there are young people in particular who would have the skills and enthusiasm to do this work for NZ groups.

This sounds like a great way to deal with the "recession" that's going on. Grow some food for the community.

Volunteering Canterbury Thinking of Volunteering while you are on holiday? Not sure where to start? Try this list of things to think about: What sort of work do you want to do? What time committment could you give? What skills can you offer? Do you need to develop further skills

Volunteering Canterbury Great article in "The Press" this week about Daphne Rogers who won a Volunteer Recognition Award. Daphne received this award for her 40 years of voluntary work delivering meals to the sick and elderly. Well done Daphne!

I wonder how many other people out there have volunteered that long? We would love to hear your stories.

Volunteering Canterbury Please read The Press today - there is a segment on Volunteers with many thanks from many industries, without volunteers to assist them - their thankless tasks would be more so. Jan :)

Volunteering Canterbury

Volunteering Canterbury This week I have been thinking about how common it is for Volunteers to work in more than 1 agency.

While 2004 statistics from USA suggest most Volunteers are involved with only 1 agency (69.6%), 19.2% were involved with 2 agencies.

Do you currently Volunteer? How many Volunteer jobs do you do? What benefits do you see in doing more than 1 Volunteer job?

I look forward to your comments.

hi there

i kinda am in a way, i'm a board member for volunteer whanganui and possibly a board member for brain injury awareness. i think it allows you to develop skills so you can add value to your 2nd vol job. you actually grow in confidence and having connections means that both organisations can help each other out. and that is really good.

Volunteering Canterbury Found this great info from a survey about youth volunteering http://www.ivr.org.uk/researchbulletins/bulletins

It suggests volunteering needs to be rebranded to reflect young people's lifestyles and its relevance to them, and to emphasise opportunities it offers. They suggest volunteering should be promoted as being cool, progressive, respected, beneficial, relevant and enhancing. What do you think?
