I am so TRULY sorry for the loss of your loved ones.

I watched my mom die take her last breath from what they kept calling "COPD". I had many discussions with ICU people about the term "COPDer" and had that term banned from use in reference to my mother.

My mother had emphysema. ... Read More

It was an absoultely horrible death to witness - and she suffered greatly, despite to morphine. Of course this was a result of smoking and being inactive at the age of 78. She had previously "graduated" from the training courses on how to breath better and conserve energy.

She was given FALSE HOPE by her doctor. She did not know that one day she would go into the hospital with pneumonia (which had happened at least 2x a year in her last year), and never make it out after her lungs failed. No one told her or her family of the "last stages" of COPD.

I believe COPD should be for the diseases that CAN BE TREATED and for people who can go on living with the disease. NOT for people who have emphysema. If someone who has emphysema is told they have COPD, he gives false hope.

you are so right. I am sure my family does not really know what I go thru and how hard it is. I really do not think anyone has read any thing. I am sure it would be said I am feeling sorry for myself. Being lonely is awful.

Debbie, you are not alone... It's very hard to try to deal with and families often put it aside in order to NOT deal. My family did not think my mom would go so quickly - we were misinformed and definitely in denial. There must be support groups in your area. Being lonely is awful. I am so sorry.

The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) is a non-profit medical society who is a long-standing network member of the Learn More Breath Better campaign. The ACCP is currently doing their part to educate the primary care community about COPD through a series of 1-day hands on workshops around the country in 2010.... These workshops are designed to help health care providers learn practical skills to identify and treat patients at risk for COPD. The course is limited to only 36 participants so its small group learning at its best! The registration fee is nominal and its truly a well developed curriculum. I slowly watched COPD take my mother's life. I am amazed at how many people have COPD and have no idea how it can kill. COPD Awareness is a must in order to save lives. Unfortunately, not too many people understand what this disease can do if it goes ignored.
