I think, to some extent, you have a point: we need to get the narrative right here. There is already an acceptance that there will be tough choices ahead and govt. expenditure will fall – it said as much in the Budget. What and how much will have to be cut, and upon whom the burden will fall to pay for our debts, is where the General Election ... Read Morewill be fought. Viewed in this context, it is right to draw attention to current direction of Tory travel, juxtaposed against that of Labour. Some Labour proposals include imposing a new higher rate of tax on the super rich and we are working with President Obama to cut down on tax avoidance (which deprives the Exchequer of more than £25bn a year), so any reductions need not be as drastic and those who can afford to pay help meet the cost of our debt. Meanwhile the Tories are still committed to inheritance tax plans which ignore 96% of families and give an average £200,000 tax cut to 3000 millionaires. Chuka
