NEW PRESERVATIVE COATING ON APPLES

Please be aware that some apple wholesalers are applying a new preservative coating to apples to keep them fresher longer. It is called LAC Resin or Shellac Resin. It makes the apples appear very shiny and fresh, and does tend to extend the shelf life. However, the caramel apple and candy apple dip will not stick to the coating on these apples.

In the past, we have told people to wash the apples with soap and water to remove the wax, but it will not remove this new coating.

In response to the wholesaler’s new apple
coating, Gold Medal is offering 5 gallon
pails of #4165 Apple Prep. Simply
submerge the apples for 10
minutes in the solution, rinse
with clean water, and wipe
dry with a clean cloth before
dipping in the caramel. You
can filter out and reuse the
Apple Prep for as long as it’s
