Holocaust Course offered 09A (Autumn Term)

32 Engl 385 001 Technology, Holocaust and Text: Autumn 2009 2-3:15, T and Th

While no course can review every technological element related to the holocaust, this one will examine various texts in literature, film and media to discern the role technologies played and continue to play in this important historical moment; it will permit students to investigate the limits of technology in producing such an experience as well as render an experience that is essentially beyond representation. The class will also consider ethical questions at the heart of recording, investigating and dispensing such material.

Students will study a variety of literary forms in translation from a number of languages and geographies – memoir, fiction, and film and mass media – that spring from the experiences of the European holocaust. Students will examine, not only concentration camp experiences, but those other experiences of ghetto-ization, resistance, hiding, and escaping that permit a larger view of the event. The course will look at how the holocaust challenges human understanding and the uses of technology to destroy as well as inform. In addition, the course will promote student appreciation of the extent to which our technological resources make possible the crime of mass murder and genocide, while also providing the means by which we learn and study such events and attempt to honor and learn from them. Classroom discussions, research assignments and projects encourage skills of logical thinking, creativity, effective communication, and competence in the discipline of English and literary studies.

Prereq: English 103. Bok: SE, LT. Credit Level: U, Credit Hours: 3.00.

Instructor: Dr. Grace A. Epstein, College of Applied Science

CEA (Cultural Experiences Award) Awarding $100,000 in Grants in July

As students make tough decisions about educational options in this economy, CEA is making it easier than ever to globalize their education. CEA is offering 100 grants worth $1,000 each for students studying abroad in Spring 2010.

Please tell your students that they can save $1,000 by applying to Spring 2010 study abroad programs through CEA. However, fewer than 100 grants remain and pricing in select cities will increase on July 31.

To apply for a grant, students may visit www.GoWithCEA.com/showcase/exhibit7.html or call 1-800-266-4441. They must use the promo code "spring10$" when applying. Please note that grants will be applied as a deduction to the full program price. Students who have applied between April 14 and July 12, 2009 are eligible without a promo code.
