Computer Hospital Hi Quentin!
First of all install AVG!, then uninstall it. Then clear your registry using registry clean expert. Then install Kaspersky in any other folder(not default). Lets see it works or not.
Thanks

Computer Hospital Hi Claudia!
If you go into Photos Section of Computer Hospital! There is a picture showing how to take out battery , its very easy or click on linke below.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=956448&id=29561677955

According to my understanding. Most chances are that your Power Adapter has been blown up as there was a power surge in your room.
And reason your computer is not turning on is becuase battery is not charged and its not picking power from Power Adapter(that gives power to your laptop) as it has blown up.
But there can be three possible reasons
1-Motherboard is blown up(somehow i think chances are less),in that case your computer is gone.
2-Power Adapter is gone, its easy to buy it and then you are done.
3-Battery is gone(which you told that already it didn't used to work).
Anyway, take out battery and plug it back and let me know any changes.
Can you see color of Power Adapter (look at it from near) ,is it changed or not? when any thing blows up,its color changes.?

Computer Hospital How old was your laptop?
Sometimes problem is only with Power Adapter and battery is dead. so in that case you don't need to worry .
Don't worry about your data . it should be safe hopefully.

Take out battery, Plug it in again.
When you press Power button, does it makes any kind of sound, noise or not?
Which make and model is it?
Did your battery used to work fine or not?

Computer Hospital Hi Barbara!
First of all i'll say try Google Chrome!
http://www.google.com/chrome

If you are getting same kind of issues with all browsers problem is with either your operating system windows xp or with your profile.
One of the possible option can be to create a new user under control Panel----users-----try to run internet explorer ,firefox(under new user account), if it runs fine. issue is fixed.

Basically we've to narrow down where exactly issue is whether its with internet explorer, your windows xp or with your profile.

Sometime java plug in is not installed, link below
http://java.com/en/download/
Do you get other error messages in windows as well or its just internet?
waiting for your reply.
thanks
