CityProwl received a red-carpet tour of the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage this afternoon and learned much about the history of the Jewish culture in Cleveland. Their immigration throughout the city started in the pre-Tower City area downtown in the 1830's to Central/Woodland, to the Glenville & Kinsman neighborhoods to the eastern suburbs about 100 years later. Find out more in the Wade Park CityProwl, coming in July!

CityProwl The soon to be renovated Moreland Theater on Buckeye Rd. is one of those wonderful movie/vaudeville houses located in Cleveland's neighborhoods, 68 built between the world wars. The advent of television and the rush to the suburbs accelerated decline of the theaters - 40 out of of them were gone by 1952, their spacious auditoriums appropriated by such heirs as bowling alleys, churches, and furniture stores.

Sweet.

I remember the movie theatres @ Pearl & Brookpark, Riverside(Rocky River Dr.?) & Lorain and the one one Center Ridge.
CityProwl at 4:30am June 4
There are a precious few that still exist - in fact, the Capitol Theater in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood is about to reopen -as a movie theater- in a few months after a year of renovations.

CityProwl was doing some research on Jewish history in Cleveland this morning and ran across the name 'Czar' Harry Bernstein, a theater operator, bank owner and ward boss at the turn of the last century. A few hours later, I read in the PD that one of Cleveland's oldest cemeteries is being renovated and the story mentions that the Czar's grave is located there. A day of coincidences!

Cleveland has some amazing cemeteries! Vicki Blum Vigil has written a number of interesting and easy to read books about nearly every cemetery in NE Ohio. She and other local cemetery volunteers will have tours and book signings at some of the Walk+Roll Cleveland events in July.
I've driven by Fir Street a number of times but never stopped in. THANK YOU to the community group and neighbors who are hosting the open house on Saturday and cleaning up the cemetery!
