Folks,
Welcome back, everyone! This year the department is going to try something new and really fun: we want to take any interested students, alumni and faculty on a whitewater rafting trip together on the Nantahala river in NC. Trust me when I say this is a real blast but it’s not so scary it will freak anyone ...out – I have done this trip with 10 year kids, Clemson students and retirees and I have never heard anyone complain of it being either too exciting or not exciting enough. As long as you don’t melt in an aqueous environment, you will have lots of fun! And it should also be a great way to meet some of the other philosophically inclined people on campus.
Here’s the basic plan: We’ll be doing this either Saturday, September 5th or Sunday the 6th, depending on what most people prefer. It’s about a 2 hour drive to Bryson City, NC, so we will all pile into vehicles early in the morning, drive up, spend 3 hours or so on the river, and drive back. Along the way we’ll find a place to eat or maybe even arrange a cookout someplace scenic. All told, the trip will last something like 8-9 hours. I will make all the arrangements to rent rafts and equipment – all you have to bring is a change of clothes and a towel (it is not possible to do this without getting wet). The budget situation is pretty tight this year, but I think I can arrange free transportation for everyone (one way or another), which means it should only cost you only about $20 per person. It’s possible I can wrangle this so it’s completely free, but you should indicate your level of interest based on a $20 outlay as I’m not sure this will be possible.
What you need to do: As soon as you can, but in any event by Friday (8/28), send me an email (kcs@clemson.edu) and let me know if you think you might want to go (no commitment right now). If you have a friend or two you’d like to bring, clue me in (I don’t think this will be a problem). If you prefer one day that weekend over the other, let me know that as well. Finally, if you have a car and you’d be willing to chauffeur people, tell me how many you can take with you. After I get an idea how many want to go, I will see just what I can arrange and I get back to those interested with more details.
Cheers,
Kelly
