Veterans of the Cleveland art scene may remember 1300 Gallery. It was a cutting edge gallery that featured top notch artists. Each opening night had a party-like atmosphere complete with DJs and a variety of foods to feast on. This same space once again exhibits art and is now called Legation.

legation, a gallery The artists in Terra Non Firma address the subject of landscape, one of the most traditional of painting genres, through various styles that are personal and distinctly contemporary. It is not by accident that these artists have developed their own personal vocabulary within a conventional format. It has been achieved ...through an ongoing exploration and the desire to connect the medium’s past with the present, allowing for an immediate, singular experience.

Ideas of primary concern are regarding instability and permutation. Throughout these artists’ works are examples of transition. There is a sense of disquietude or of expectations being subverted, occurring often from recognized forms flirting with abstraction or unexpected content. This brings about an opportunity for the viewers to respond to the work empirically and metaphorically. While none of the work is overtly political, there is a sense of the world around us in upheaval. There are echoes of the uncertainty that currently exist on local, national and international levels.

Terra non Firma will be running at both Legation Gallery and Front Room Gallery simultaneously to bridge the gap between east and west through one collaborative show. Live music by Brian Straw (www.myspace.com/brainstraw) at Legation following the opening.

Closing Reception- November 28, 6-9pm

Featuring work by:

Hilary Aurand, Judith Brandon, Jerry Birchfield, Kristin Bly, Amy Casey, Andrew Curlowe
Peter Gent, Megan Herwig, Jessica Langley, Mark Keffer, Matt Kolodziej, Christine McCullough
Joshua Rex, Alex Tapie, and Douglas Max Utter
