Antonette Maldonato It is the human's responsibility to ensure the care, safety and respect of our domestic fur-family as the human being manipulated the canine for his own selfish purposes and has abandoned and rejected this species for $$$$$$$$$$$$.

Looking back over the stories covered in 2009, a theme starts to emerge: America's fascination with individual achievement, and our never-ending search for heroes. In that positive spirit, USA WEEKEND MAGAZINE asked Brian Williams to make picks for the five 'best' news stories of the 2009.

we just shamelessly want to clarify -- we did unchain 175 last year, but since our inception, we've unchained over 425 dogs!

Did you find out if there are tethering laws in Savannah? Or even if there aren't, whether there are any other ways to help?

Coalition to Unchain Dogs What is 175? That's the number of dogs unchained in 2009 by Coalition volunteers in Durham, Raleigh, and Charlotte, NC. Tomorrow, January 1, 2010, we will start a new year by building a fence for two more chained dogs in Durham -- and continue to move forward as we start new Chapters in Greensboro, NC and Virginia. ...Thank you to all our Facebook fans and supporters, your support makes this work possible. It's not too late to make a year-end tax-deductible contribution at our website www.unchaindogs.org. Have a safe New Year's Eve, and look for a "Best of 2009" video coming soon!

We need to get something like this going in Tennessee. I see so many dogs tethered when I am out walking mine. It makes me want to rescue them from the cold and give them a warm loving home. What can be done? I need to know how to take action. I don't want to just go home and forget about it.

Susan I have a problem: Our Lab/Shep mix keeps jumping our fence (when just being let out to pee) and attacking smaller dogs that are being walked on our street in our quiet neighborhood. What can I do???

The solution probably depends on the type and height of your existing fence. Our fences are generally 5 or 6 feet high, and our initial strategy for jumpers and climbers is to construct a "lip" that blocks their attempts to get over the fence. Using hog rings, we attach sections of 3-foot welded wire to the top of the fence and bend them back toward the interior of the yard at approximately a 30 degree angle.

It actually occurred to me yest. that we should just try a muzzle on her. She had an appt at the groomer today, so we got one. I think it'll be the best $10.00 we ever spent on her. I already feel a lot safer walking her and letting her out to pee w/it on. I appreciate the feedback from you, C.t.U.D.!
