Colin Britt For spring, the New Haven Chorale welcomes the choruses and orchestra of The Hartt School for a fresh hearing of a timeless theme: the quest for peace on earth. Dramatic readings will link a powerful progression of choral and orchestral metaphors for life’s rich potential, war’s tragic waste, and the universal longing ...for peace. A rousing choral-orchestral prelude on the joys of youth by Colin Britt will open this contemplative evening, followed by Holst’s ‘Jupiter, the Giver of Jollity’ from his The Planets evoking the fullness of life and his discordant ‘Mars, the Giver of War’ conjuring the terror of violent conflict. Karol Szymanowsky’s poignant Stabat Mater will represent the human cost of war through its compelling vision of a mother’s mourning the loss of her son. Finally, 300 performers under the direction of Maestro Bolkovac will culminate this musical and literary pilgrimage with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ powerful Dona Nobis Pacem, a setting of Walt Whitman’s sweeping anti-war poetry.
