I don't have much of an opinion about the Shroud of Turin, and for that matter, the Catholic Church doesn't definitively say whether it is genuine or not.  But, there is some interesting research that just came out about it.Barbara Frale, a researcher at the Vatican archives, says in a new b...

Q - Aren't there a bunch of different Catholic rites? I mean, you have the Roman, Byzantine, Carmelite, Dominican, and a whole bunch of other different titles. What happened? Why the split? What makes us different, and what makes us all Catholic? What makes our church the 'right one'/th...

What a treat!  One of my favorite professors from grad school, Douglas Bushman, is doing a series of lectures for the Diocese of Fort Worth on John Paul II.  It is a great way to get an intro to JPII from a scholar who knows him well.  Bushman is one of the best theologians that fe...

If you have never read anything from Archbishop Fulton Sheen, you should.  Here is a sample:Sin was the act by which man refused to see created things for what they were -- stepping stones to God, a means to an end -- and began instead to clutch at them as ends in themselves. That is what si...

"I am busy."  The mantra of modern man.  I know I have said it too many times. Are you busy? Maybe a better question would be “why are you busy”?I think in our modern day, being “busy” has become a badge of honor. A badge that many are more than happy to wear because it allows them to sa...

Apparently a certain student, who will remain unnamed, has a bit too much time on their hands.  This is the result. It is quite a flattering rendition, even if my head is a bit too round and my body a bit too small.I find it a nice match for other portraits, such as the holy card Marcel (done...

Q - I was talking to my younger sister the other day and she asked me why we bow our heads during the Nicene Creed when we say, "By the Power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary and became Man." A recent study says so. But, did we need a study to tell us this? A new study finds university students in coed housing are 2.5 times more likely to binge drink every week. And no surprise, they're also likely to have more sexual partners, the study found. Also, pornography use was higher among s...

That would be CONsubstantiation (real presence = Jesus spiritually present in, under, around, and through the bread and the wine) rather than TRANSubstantiation (the bread and wine are miraculously physically transformed into the actual flesh and blood of Jesus - TRULY present - while retaining for our sakes the appearance of bread and wine. This is a dramatically different view of the Sacrament.

Yup, it is a major difference. Transubstantiation is not accepted outside of the Catholic and Orthodox church. Another significant difference is that Catholics do not recognize Lutheran clergy as part of the apostolic succession which is essential for transubstantiation to take place.

Q - I have a question about lying. We all know lying is a sin, I think even an intrinsically evil one. CCC 2485. What about the police sting operations? Specifically the ones used to catch child predators. Often times a police agent will pose as a child in order to entice the criminal. Sinf...

So you've likely got a filmmaker who is anti-Catholic. Again, Hollywood--yadda yadda. But consider the tacit admission of the power and majestic beauty that is part & parcel of Catholicism. Read MoreMoresignificance of the institution itself. To the people who do see the movie, the destruction of iconic representations of Catholicism will be moments of horror and tragedy (presumably), not occasions for triumph, unless I'm misreading the context of the film. This is where considering the narrative context of the scene is useful, as sometimes the narrative as a whole can make a statement that is different from the isolated examples of visual rhetoric. And often an author, filmmaker, etc., makes a very different impression than the one he might have been intending. Creativity is funny that way...

Had this discussion the other night with a KC friend of mine. We came to the conslusion that it might be that few Catholis are granted a Sacrement invalidation. Read Morecausing Catholics to live with an unmarried partner. Converserly, when I was trying to find find witnesses for my invalidation, I ask on Catholic lady who had been divorced and had remarried to be my witness (she had not had her first marriage invalidated by the Church). She refused on the grounds she didn't believe in Sacrement invalidation of marriage, but yet she didn't mind being remarried without the Church's permission. I couldn't get that straight in my mind. I was judging her as she was a very good friend, and my former wife was her cousin. I just could understand her logic.
