Opening August 2009:
Sense of Time: Incense has played such an important role in so many aspects of daily life in East Asia from the most ancient times, and formed part of so many functions, that it is not surprising that it was eventually utilized for time measurement. This exhibit will present numerous examples of East Asian "fire clocks" along with other cultural material presenting the significance of incense to Asian culture.

National Watch & Clock Museum The National Watch & Clock Museum has just begun a new program that allows generous individuals to support the Museum through the act of adopting a timepiece on exhibit for one year. The Museum Timepiece Adoption Program is just another way you can help preserve our shared horological past. Adoptions for some objects start at $250, but any donation is welcome.

National Watch & Clock Museum We've been busy painting the special exhibit gallery in preparation for installing the Time & Exploration exhibit. Objects from Jamestown, Virginia and the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia are being picked up next week. Additionally, we'll be picking up several objects on loan from the National Air & Space Museum as well. Once the objects are here, we'll begin the case layout, exhibit labeling, etc. We'll post some pictures of the objects shortly.

Almost all of the Presidential timepieces have returned to their home museums and we are finalizing the loans for 2009's exhibit on time and exploration. We are very excited about some of the objects we will have on loan for this exhibit.
The exhibit will feature a couple of objects that visitors rarely get the opportunity to see up close (certainly not in Lancaster, PA anyway). Among them include an ivory sundial excavated at Jamestown Fort in Jamestown, VA; a marine chronometer used by Spanish Admiral Alava (of Trafalgar fame) on his 1780's circumnavigation of the globe; a lunar sample taken during Apollo 17's visit to the moon; and many other unique navigational and timekeeping objects from other explorations.
We'll post photos as we begin the installation, so stay tuned!
