Ohio Nurses Association *Question of the Week... Do you carry malpractice insurance? Why or why not? Does your insurance include coverage for an attorney if a complaint is made against you at the Board of Nursing?

Yes, I carry my own nursing malpractice insurance. I made that decision years ago when I seen institutions become more finance centered and from ONA's advice to RN's./
My policy reads "legal representation", it doesn't state an attorney.
Now you have me thinking.... I better check-out what exactly "legal representation" means.

Ohio Nurses Association *Question of the week...* ONA recently passed a resolution at the 2009 House of Delegates to support a “BSN in Ten” requirement for newly licensed associate or diploma graduates. If this requirement became law, do you think it would discourage students from pursuing a nursing career?

There seems to be no shortage of people entering pharmacy and they require a PhD in Ohio just to enter practice. This resolution does not set a BSN as an entry into the profession, but would require attaining one within 10 years of entry. That seems to be an adequate length of time to reach that goal. The same requirement applies to teachers in ... See Moremany school districts. It would be good for the nursing profession and good for our patients to have a higher number of BSN prepared nurses in the workforce.

It may - but it would also weed the ones out who are not truly passionate about nursing. I agree with Barbara that 10 yrs after entry is plenty of time to get a BSN. I recently got my BSN and am now working on my MSN and it just makes you a better "all around" nurse - it really opens up your eyes to the whole picture. I like the law.

I don't see a shortage of nurses in ohio as far as the hiring goes....plenty of jobs out there but none for new nurses in ohio. Most of the jobs I have seen are for nurses with 1-2+ years of nursing experience.
