Lori J. Goldstein, M.D., Director of the Breast Evaluation Center and Leader of the Breast Cancer Research Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, will be joining Commonwealth North Thursday, November 19th from 12-1 in the Chart Room at the Hilton Hotel to discuss the advances in research leading toward tar...geted therapy of breast cancer and how chronic illness is affecting Health Care reform.
Dr. Goldstein is the 2009 Carol Treadwell Visiting Fellow. She has been recognized on the list of "The Best Doctors in America" six times.
As Director of the Breast Evaluation Center, Dr. Goldstein leads a team of breast cancer experts in developing treatment plans for patients with early and late stage breast cancer and empowering patients with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their care. In her role as Leader of the Breast Cancer Research Program, she manages research across the breast cancer continuum from prevention, etiology, early detection, treatment to survivorship. Dr. Goldstein is committed to participating in the national agenda for breast cancer research and care and represents Fox Chase Cancer Center as the Principal Investigator for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG). She serves on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Breast Cancer Guidelines Committee. Additionally, Dr. Goldstein is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, The American Society of Clinical Oncology and has served on the Editorial Board for Cancer.net.
Breast Cancer remains one of the most common malignancies among women, second only in incidence to lung cancer. Over the last fifteen years, breast cancer death rates have decreased by 15%. Two plausible explanations for the decline are an increase in breast cancer awareness leading to early detection, and improvements in systemic therapy. The current direction of breast cancer research is aimed at understanding the specific biology of each breast cancer to provide customized individual treatment to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with the disease.

In an effort to continue the Health Care dialogue and examine how changes in Washington may affect Alaskans here at home, Commonwealth North will host a health care panel Tuesday, November 10th from 7-8am at the Dena'ina Center to decipher some of the uncertainties facing health care reform and the effects those change...s may have on Alaska. The panel will include Tom Nighswander MD, MPH with Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, Jeff Davis, Executive Director of Premera Blue Cross of Alaska, Pat Luby Advocacy Director for AARP's Alaska State Office, and Bruce Lamoureux Chief Operating Officer of Providence Alaska Medical Center.
Health Care reform has become a major issue throughout the nation as Washington wrestles with how to bridge the health care gap. As health care prices continue to rise many Americans are finding themselves without basic health care. So far the reform process has been open, but happening at an alarmingly quick rate. Now the government is trying to keep the reform budget under a trillion dollars while many are still concerned we are only propping up a broken down system which needs serious structural reform. Our panel will try to shed light on many of the contentious health care reform road blocks that are being debated and paint the picture of how these controversies may affect us here is Alaska.

Commonwealth North members are invited to attend a reception, Monday October 19 from 6:15-8pm in the Foredeck at the Hotel Captain Cook honoring Ambassador David Balton, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and representatives of Arctic nations attending the first-ever International Arctic Fisheries Symposium....
This year, Commonwealth North published "Why the Arctic Matters: America's Responsibilities as an Arctic Nation," the report of its Arctic issues study group. Many of the issues surveyed by the study group and recommendations adopted were included in the formal U.S. Arctic policy drafted by Ambassador Balton, signed by President Bush in January of this year, and now being implemented with the endorsement and leadership of the Obama Administration.
The fisheries workshop being held in Anchorage brings together experts of Arctic nations just after the United States issued a moratorium on most commercial fishing in the Arctic Ocean, north of the Bering Strait. Other nations, including our neighbors Russia and Canada, may or may not follow suit.
Commonwealth North is delighted to welcome Ambassador Balton and hopes Alaskans will recognize the work he is doing for our nation and our state, as it affects us in all of our fisheries, Arctic policy, and oceans and climate policy overall.
