Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP) This weekend, the Senate joined the House in approving the final 2010
appopriations bill that will lift the ban, without the deadly
not-near-1000-feet-of-anything amendment that would have rendered it
virtually meaningless. But who really did work to lift the ban?

Bill Clinton said NOT lifting the federal funding ban on syringe exchange was one of the biggest regrets in his presidency. But he didn't fess up to that till he was safely out of the White House.

Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP) We need weekend calls and emails to get LGBTQ job rights...

Right now in this country, there is no federal legislation that protects lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workers from job discrimination - and
that puts people at higher risk of poverty, lack of health care,
homelessness and other factors that can increas...e vulnerability to HIV
or progression to AIDS.

But the bill that would end this discrimination - the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (H.R. 3017/S. 1584) - is being delayed in the House of Representatives!

Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP) CHAMP Announces Search for Co-Director!

This
autumn, CHAMP engaged in strategic planning and developed a new,
sustainable structure that includes two Co-Directors as executive
leadership.

Julie Davids, who has been serving as CHAMP's Senior Consultant, has been appointed Co-Director.
Kelly McGowan is serving as an Interim Co...-Director for the duration of the search and hiring process for our second Co-Director.

We
are seeking a co-leader who can work closely with a small staff and an
active and engaged Board and Advisory Committee to ensure that the
CHAMP Network responds quickly and effectively to the advocacy and
activism priorities that arise from our constituency. The CHAMP Co-Director will play a significant role harnessing
and directing the power of our network to pursue prevention justice.

Regardless of the results when the dust settles late on Election Day 2008, we know for certain: the AIDS pandemic will still be a national and global crisis.

Will our new Administration and Congress call for bold measures... to address a deepening domestic AIDS epidemic? Will Washington generate a National AIDS Strategy based on the evidence of what works, or will business-as-usual inside the Beltway hinder our efforts? What are the emerging politics around full funding for honest HIV prevention and groundbreaking research?

We know what's at stake. The question remains, what will we do - together - to achieve a justice-based HIV prevention strategy to end AIDS?

Please join us for in-depth analysis and discussion on prospects for:

* Developing, funding and implementing a National AIDS Strategy - on our terms
* Eliminating federal funding mandates for ineffective and harmful abstinence-only-until-marriage programs, and instead winning effective comprehensive sex ed
* Securing access to comprehensive treatment and care, including Medicaid, Medicare and passing ETHA, the Early Treatment for HIV Act
* Fully lifting the entry bar for HIV positive immigrants and visitors
* Ending the ban on federal financing for needle exchange
* Scaling-up the HIV prevention initiatives designed for the communities that carry the burden of the U.S. epidemic - gay men, especially gay men & MSM of color, young people and women of color
* Broadening the federal research portfolio for HIV prevention

Presenters:

* Vanessa Brocato: Executive Director - Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP), New York, NY
* Christine Campbell: VP, National Advocacy and Organizing - Housing Works, Washington, DC
* Chris Collins: National AIDS Strategy, Maplewood, NJ
* Dennis deLeon: Executive Director - Latino Commission on AIDS, New York, NY
* Kali Lindsey: Vice President, Federal Government Affairs - National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA), Silver Spring, MD
* Mark McLaurin: Public Policy Director - Public Justice Center, Baltimore, MD
* Additional speakers TBD

Moderator:

* Naina Khanna: National Advocacy Coordinator - WORLD (Women Organized to Respond to Life-threatening Diseases) & Positive Women's Network USA, Oakland, CA

Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP) Please join us for a teleconference on how to handle media hype when a breaking HIV/AIDS situation strikes.

Sensational and distorted press coverage of HIV/AIDS continues to be a hallmark of the epidemic. Some memorable examples include:

* A PWA sex worker lands in jail when she discloses her HIV status to police while r...eporting abuse by her clients in a university dorm

* The New York City health department sparks a "superbug" scare in the media when it reports a single case of multiple-drug-resistant, fast-progressing HIV

* Reports of rising HIV incidence among youth and gay men prompt judgments broadly proclaiming the failure of prevention while sidelining its proven effectiveness

We will discuss how to move beyond panic and to plan and communicate constructive responses to problematic HIV/AIDS media stereotypes.
