The Power Advantage Relationship (PAR) and Trust
There are many forms of power-advantaged relationships. When we contract professional services from a healthcare provider, we are naturally in a power-advantaged relationship because the professional has knowledge, skills, and education that we do not necessarily possess. Power advantages also exist organizationally as when we are an employee, student, volunteer, community member, or team member. Romantic relationships can have similar power advantaged impact when dependency exists.
When legal, professional, ethical or moral standards are breached, our trust is violated and our personal power is impacted in some way ranging from minor insult to major trauma.
