ABOUT LAURA
“A warm, rich, fresh voice, great songwriting and fabulous musicianship”
Pat Moore CKCU-FM Weekend Warm-Up Ottawa, ON
“Laura’s songs speak to the strength, grace and truth she finds in the extraordinary and the everyday.” Jan Vanderhorst CKPC-FM Just Us Folk Brantford, ON

Released in November, The Water In Between was included in Penguin Eggs Magazine’s DJ top ten favourites of 2008 and placed among Galaxie Folk-Roots satellite radio top ten high rotation album releases of 2009 for three consecutive months (March-May 2009). After a full summer of festival performances including the Red Roof Women’s Music Festival, Blue Skies Festival and Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, Laura has a busy fall and winter concert schedule including a return visit to Nova Scotia this November and Canadian West Coast tour taking shape for 2010.

Drawing inspiration from a mosaic of musical influences beginning with early folk roots and bluegrass to old jazz standards, her songs tug at the familiar; contemporary set against the backdrop of a traditional musical panorama. Through the keen eye of the observer her songs are sensitive, compassionate and heartfelt often drawing visual references from a childhood spent growing up in small town Ontario along the St. Lawrence River. With her warm, relaxed stage presence, finely honed guitar work, a painters' eye for lush images and sultry, smokey voice, you'll want to close your eyes and watch the mind movies inspired by Laura’s soundtrack.

Orangeville Ontario songstress Laura Bird has served on both the OCFF and ArtsCan Circle Board of Directors; she co-founded the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award; co-founded the Headwaters Acoustic Music Society and retired as Artistic Director of the Live! At the Opera House concert series in Orangeville in April 2008.

ABOUT DARREN
“Tony Rice meets Bruce Cockburn” Stephen Fearing
“A whiz of a guitar player, and a crowd pleasing entertainer” Stephen pederson

Darren Arsenault was born performing in a cloud of smoke commonly known as Toronto. His howling melodies could be heard throughout the hospital so they spanked him. His talents have vastly improved since leaving the womb. Fast forward. In 1984 Darren escaped to Nova Scotia where he built a house as far into the Wood’s as one can go. In 2008 he found his way out of the woods and can presently be found somewhere on the banks of the LaHave River.

Known for his strong banjo and guitar ability, Darren also plays a whack of other stringed instruments including Dobro, mandolin, dulcimer, harp, drums and percussion. His rhythmic and percussive style comes from his formative years as a drummer. His resonant voice and emotionally charged lyrics combined with his energy on stage, makes him one of the brightest shining musical entertainers in Nova Scotia.

Darren is an endearing performer who will capture your heart at every show. He tailors his performance to the audience whether he's playing solo, duo or with a trio. His diverse abilities have given Darren a reputation for being an artist who bends and twists musical styles, creating a very cool sound that is unmistakably his own.

If a Mississippi Blues man married a Tijuana Hooker and had a baby in Nova Scotia, that baby would be Darren Arsenault!

Darren Arsenault Darren Arsenault CD Release Party
Darren Arsenault – New CD “What You Want”

Known for his strong banjo and guitar ability, Darren also plays a whack of other stringed instruments. His rhythmic and percussive style comes from his formative years as a drummer. His Resonant voice and emotionally charged lyrics ice the mult...i-layered cake that is his repertoire. He plays many instruments and tends to experiment with all of them. He plays; lead and rhythm guitar (acoustic and electric), banjo, dobro, mandolin, harmonica, drums, percussion and a little fiddle and piano

The Hupman Brothers are an important Nova Scotia band to watch. Their original sound is played with superb musicianship and as brothers they play as if one, knowing where the music is heading and how to make it their own. Most often, Scott offers textured and percussive guitar and bass work and Ryan performs exciting and intricate guitar solos. The lead vocals are richly expressive and enhanced by clear and evocative back-up harmonies. This can be experienced by listening to their first CD, released in 2007, which is a self-titled collection of 16 original songs. Nominated by Music Nova Scotia for the Blues Album of the Year, this CD weaves lyrics, melody and harmony into a seamless expression of the everyday love, hurt and wonder we all share. Their stories are our stories.

Good stuff, I have seen Darren a few times around Lunenburg County when I use to play out and about and no doubt he is a treat to see play. Also seen him at the first or second Stan Rogers Folk Fest. one year as well.
