Gifts should NOT be the focal point of the Holiday Season!
We have all been affected by the economic happenings of the year that is ending. Let’s take this time to remember the good moments we lived in 2009, cherish our friends and family and spend quality time with our loved one. Regardless of what Holidays you cele...brate, this time of year should be to reflect on the last 12 months, appreciate the positive moments you lived and learn from past mistakes to grow and become better human beings. Don’t let the collective buying angst get to you. Gift buying, should not be the focal point of your Holidays. Show your appreciation towards others by making them a nice card, expressing how much you care for them on a regular basis, and spending quality time and meaningful conversations. It’s NOT all about the gifts. Remember this as you finish your Holiday shopping. And most important of all, give a gift to yourself, make sure you set some money a side during these times of spending to add to you savings account or your emergency fund. Here are some tips to keep your budget under control this Holiday Season.
Take out your credit cards from your wallet!
Avoid malls and stores at their peak hours.
Make a holiday spending budget AND STICK TO IT!
Set a limit on the cost and number of gifts you are buying.
Consider giving homemade gifts.
Set ground rules for the family in terms of spending limits.
Remember, this Holiday Season should be for enjoying your loved ones, and giving Thanks for the wonderful things you have in your life: your health, your work, and your family and friends. Don’t max out your credit card on gifts. Keep your priorities straight and don’t lose sight of your budget. Try to limit the amount of commercials you expose yourself and your children to, and avoid unnecessary trips to stores.

Financial experts agree that starting early is one of the keys to financial success. Thus, $mart Money Choices = A Brighter Future was selected as the theme of the 2010 Poster Contest.

”$mart Money Choices = A Brighter Future”
Eligibility
The 2010 National Poster Contest will feature three grade categories:
Childre...n can submit entries directly, it is not a requirement to have your school participate.
Elementary – 3rd through 5th Grades
Middle – 6th though 8th Grades
High – 9th through 12th Grades
Poster Specifications
Posters may be between 8 ½” by 11” and 11” by 17” in size (11” by 17” is preferred.) All posters must be submitted on white paper/stock. Original and computer-generated artwork will be accepted.
Note: For submissions from younger students, consider writing theme on poster to keep student focused on message.

The contest is a great way to get young students thinking about how to manage money effectively and offers them a creative outlet to demonstrate their knowledge. it offers the opportunity for local and national recognition for student artwork and rewards winners with US savings bonds and other prizes.
The first place winner will be presented with a $500 US savings bond and a trip (with a parent or guardian) to Washington, DC in April, recognized nationally as Financial Literacy Month
“Teachers have found this to be a creative way to introduce their students to the concept of financial literacy, and often incorporate it into their lesson plans,” said Gail Cunningham, spokesperson for the NFCC. “The idea has been widely embraced, with thousands of posters submitted over the past few years.”
